Build the perfect meal. Even on the dreariest New Jersey winter day, the smiles from "Charlie Chan" (that's the name he goes by but for some reason, I don't think it's his REAL name : ) ) and his friendly and ever-attentive staff, the oldies rock being played, and the clean and well lit just brighten your spirits. You can order traditional Chinese dishes and sushi, but hey... you're here for the Mongolian grill anyway.
So after ordering the type of rice and soup you want with your buffet, grab a big bowl and start filling. You know the drill, meats, veggies, and of course those noodles, slather on the sauce and hand it over to the man with the big hat. Moments later, a steaming dish of yum. (Want to impress your date or the kiddies? Put a buck in the tip jar and the chef will ring the tip bell).
On the way back, take a look at the small Chinese buffet choices... scallion pancake, sweet and sour chicken, lo mein, and more. And grab some since you want your Mongolian grub to cool down (I've burnt many a taste bud trying to scarf the delish stuff too quickly!). Sit down and enjoy some conversation and good food that you actually made to order.
At lunch, you can only make one trip to the grill but at dinner, it's all you can eat. Expect to spend about $7 for lunch and $11 for dinner.l [10 Apr 2001 13:07:27]

Healthy and Inexpensive J.P. Lee's in Millburn is an exceptional restaurant. Not only is the food outstanding, the people there treat you like one of their own. The manager at the front of the restaurant, Charlie, is funny and witty. He can speak mulitple languages as well as give you free chopstick lessons. What I liked most about this place was that I was able to create my own meal. The Mongolian BBQ is their specialty, and this is where you choose your favorite meats, veggies, noodles, and sauces to be grilled right in front of you. The chefs use giant chopsticks to cook your meal to perfection. The sushi, chinese buffet, and shrimp cocktail are all included in the dinner buffet. The value I got for this price was exceptional. For $10.95 per person you will not leave the restaurant hungry. This is an extremely fresh and healthy way of eating. They take cash, as well as MC, Visa, and Discover. Also, you can bring your own liquior without a problem. They have all of the necessary ammenities for the alcohol(wine opener, glasses, and ice buckets). J.P. Lee's is truly an extraordinary value. Charlie Just a correction.. the manager's name is Charlie CHEN (NOT Chan), and yes, that is his real name :o)
I eat at J.P. Lees frequently, and it's one of my favorite places. Everyone I bring there, while skeptical at first, are usually won over very easily. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! [17 Apr 2002 13:58:38]

MMMMMMM! Ok well let me start off by saying this is my favorite resturaunt! But be careful... don't go on a full stomach. It's a good idea not to eat lunch before going there for dinner. I usually go for around at the bbq, a round of sushi, some egg drop soup and if i have any room (remember no lunch before this) i'll go for the chinese buffet. Really friendly... Charlie really knows his customers... He greets my family on a first name basis every time! [29 Sep 2002 00:21:41]

Why go anyplace else? We love JP Lee's!!!! The food is always fresh and tasty. The staff is wonderful and we're happy to say that we're regulars. We can often be heard singing, "Where everybody knows your name, and they're always glad you came" as we walk to our car after a great meal at JP Lee's. [25 May 2003 18:17:06]

You just can't get enough I go here all the time. Charlie remembers everyone and makes you feel at home. Most of the wait staff remember you also. They are quick to refill your drink or get you whatever you need. [04 Sep 2005 11:20:59]

Do NOT Eat at JP Lee's I took a group of people to JP Lee's in Millburn and was quite disappointed. While the owner is friendly, it doesn't excuse the bad food. The restaurant and buffets are in dire need of updating. On top of that, the chefs are down right rude and the food was crap. One of our guests picked out his food and was shouted at when he went to add pineapple to the dish before the Chef cooked it. The Chef would just grunt when asked a question - no personality. The food was cooked so quickly that it was barely cooked and had an awful taste from the layers of sauces that were burnt onto the grill. Clean the grill, buddy! The sign said cocktail shrimp, didn't see it on the buffet so we asked, they pointed to a plastic dish-pan container with ice on the counter. There were a total of six in the container, they did fill it up. But the impression we got, was that they wanted to save the shrimp and hoped we didn't ask for it. Oh get this, the restaurant didn't have Wonton Soup. How does a Chinese restaurant NOT have Wonton Soup? Now, the Chinese food buffet, down right disgusting. The food was tasteless, the hot food was cold and it had been sitting there so long it a film on it. The containers were only filled with a couple of cups of each dish - not enough for a group of people. Just awful. I was embarrassed that we took people there. The worst part, they charge $11.99 for dinner - no dessert! They should either close their doors or step-it up, I will NEVER recommend this place. Far to much competition to waste your money on a crappy meal. [24 Jun 2008 11:09:18]

Avoid JP Lee's What a disappointment. After reading the positive reviews and seeing its location, I figured this place had to be good. Boy was I wrong. The inside needs a good scrubbing and the food was anything but fresh. The vegetables looked like they were chopped early in the day and left out all day. I have been to other Mongolian BBQ places and I like them. JP Lee's is the worst one I have ever been to. While I may have chosen the ingredients, when you start with less than good ingredients, you can't get a good final product. I am waiting to see if I am up sick all night from the food.
