Moldy pie; Rude management response I have frequented this diner for many years, and loved my meals, especially the desserts. With an out-of-state friend and a few others, we went to Sage Diner on Oct 29. The service was excellent, the food was wonderful - and then dessert.
Two people ordered the chocolate cream pie; one was sitting next to me. I noticed the pie filling didn't seem to be moist and creamy, and that the filling peeled away from the crust. A moment later, my friend held the plate towards me and asked, "Is that what I think it is?" Green mold was clearly visible throughout the pie. We immediately told the other person to stop eating. Hers was moldy as well.
These things happen to the best of restaurants. I figured we'd speak with the manager, we'd be given our meals for free, at minimum the two who had moldy dessert wouldn't pay.
On the contrary, the hostess came over instead of the manager. She took both desserts away. We were so shocked we didn't take pics, though we had 3 cameras on the table. Finally the manager came over, had us explain the problem again and, after exclaiming "Mold?" in a tone that indicated disbelief, walked away. When she returned, she said that she'd never seen mold in 16 yrs; moments later it was 20 yrs, and told us that the desserts are made every day! We didn't react quickly enough to ask if EVERY dessert was made fresh every day. This particular pie was certainly not fresh.
She took "the desserts" off the bill - three desserts, total. When I questioned if that was all she was going to do, her response was, "You ate your dinners, didn't you? They were good, weren't they?"
I was stunned into silence by her rudeness. Quickly recovering I told her that I would do my best to ensure that others did not patronize her restaurant in the future. For the cost of a $70 dinner bill, she's getting bad press.
It's a shame. I do love the cheesecake / chocolate mousse / ganache dessert. The food, the prices & the service were wonderful. [04 Nov 2007 01:20:29]
