Wonderful Polish cooking The name gives nothing away. However Julian's offers a wide array of Polish dishes. There is no ambiance and the heating and air conditioning are terrible. But if you go when the weather is appropriate you will be treated to amazing food at low prices.
On weekdays they have a phenominal buffet lunch for $6.95. Nothing fancy, but everything is good. There are usually two soups which are full of flavor. Starches are represented by some sort of potatoes, sometimes barley, and usually some dumplings. Various meat and chicken dishes are always there, each one with its own distinctive taste.
Dessert is usually some sort of cake. They look like something you might expect to find on an airplane menu, and taste better than most of the six and seven dollar cakes you get in more upscale restaurants.
For fine Polish food you can't do better than Julian's. [15 May 2006 08:22:20]

Don't go there, Terrible service If you are interested in taking your family out to dinner, I would not recommend this place to my worst enemy. The food is OK, nothing spectacular. The service on the other hand is complete disaster!! No one speaks english, except for the owner/waitress (Violeta) who is very rude, not pleasant, no personality. Don't expect to have a warm experience when dining at Julian. Not only from my experience but many others as well. [26 Dec 2007 12:54:39]

Go for the food, not the ambiance or service The first reviewer is more on - really good Polish food. We especially enjoy the "Gypsy Special" (huge portion of potato pancake piled high with goulash on top). Their Hunters Stew, Perogies, and Stuffed Cabbage are all very good.
I would skip their Turkish coffee - it's reasonably stong and has a nice flavor but is way to chock full of grounds.
We have never experienced any issues with poor heating or AC. But, the trick with going to Julian's is timing. Don't go there when they have one of their regular private parties (baby shower or birthday).
Go for a nice early dinner, and show up Tuesday to Friday before 7:15pm and you'll be set. Call first in case they have a private party.
Service is OK. Nothing special but certainly NOT terrible either. The owner and waitress are way too busy in the back getting big to-go platter orders together for her to spend much time catering to a customer with overly high expectations of what Julian's is - and is not.
Go to Julian's for the FOOD. Kick back and relax. Bring your own beer. It's an authentic Polish experience - not a Polish restaurant with really great American-style customer service.
If you want good Polish food with a bit more ambiance and service, go to nearby Villa Polonia on 1150 Brunswick Ave. But still, the service is more typical eastern european: professional and pleasant but not necessarily what we think of as friendly. In other words, service will be prompt but they will not be falling all over themselves just because some non-Polish person decided to try them out. When you become a regular, then expect more smiles. Villa Polonia has a fair amount more of walk-in dining, likely because of their better location.
But - the goulash is much better at Julian's - hands down. [27 Jun 2008 15:38:31]
