Excellent Enchiladas Had Enchiladas with green sauce and they were excellent, as were the beans and rice. Will try Chope's next time for a comparison. [11 Aug 2007 18:52:35]

Nicer than Chope's, but Food Not as Good! Stopped in Severos today in La Mesa. It is not on a non-existent San Francisco St, but right there on Route 28 almost across from Chope's (but a little to the north). It looks a lot nicer and larger than Chope's from the outside. It is fairly roomy inside and brighter than Chope's. The tables are well-spaced. The place is clean and orderly. The tables have plastic tablecloths and the chairs are somewhat uncomfortable. One waitress was serving the entire area, but she did a good job. She was polite, personable, and efficient. The menu is a little broader than Chope's with steaks and some American food. They were doing a brisk business this day at lunch, although there was plenty of room left...no problem getting a table as at Chope's. It appears that many diners come over here who do not want to put up with the crowding at Chope's. This is understandable. The waitress said as much when I mentioned the picture of Chope's Restaurant on the wall. She said that with Chope's drawing so many diners down to La Mesa it is a win-win situation for all. Severos had pictures of all the well known landmarks around La Mesa and, of course, Chope's was one. Severos has ample parking besides, unlike Chope's. The waitress had chips and salsa on my table rapidly and the order was taken quickly. The food was prepared in a timely manner. The chips were the more corn-tasting, firmer variety. The salsa was pretty hot, but could have been tastier. Rate it a B-. The brisket flauta was clearly inferior. Tasteless! Rate it a D. The chile relleno was not a whole lot better. Rate it a C. The Chile con Carne had large chunks of meat (no potato) and large pieces of chile, but it was not very good...mediocre at best. Rate it a C. The Carne Adovada Burrito was pretty good. It had large chunks of pork and a decent seasoning, but too much refried beans for my liking. Rate it a B. All in all, a decent place with pretty good service, but clearly the food is not in the big leagues. This would be a nice alternative to the crowded Chope's if the food was worth it, but it is not. While Chope's food is clearly "overrated," (perhaps B+ or A-), it is certainly better than Severos. [20 Sep 2007 18:23:44]
