The Best Burritos Anywhere...Hands Down! Alice the Burrito Lady opened in Las Cruces in January 2009. In a small plaza at the corner of Madrid and Solano, it is a small establishment with only about three tables. The place is new, clean, and well maintained. Most of the business is, obviously, takeout. It appeared that the menu and most signs are in Spanish, so you know the customer base is mostly Hispanic. It has been quite busy ever since it opened and upon my visit there I could see why. Three middle-aged women were the only employees visible. One was mostly working the grill which had a constant supply of fresh meats being grilled. Another was rolling out fresh dough and making torta buns and large tortillas right on the spot. The third was working up front taking and filling orders. The menu here is quite limited (burritos, breakfast burritos, and tortas with a few other offerings). The food is traditional northern Mexican with no New Mex or Gringo-Mex type offerings to be found. Upon arriving I found myself in a line of about ten patient people. It took about 15 minutes to get waited on, but once I was the burrito was prepared quickly and I was out the door. The service was friendly and pleasant. I ordered the large ($5.00) burrito especiales...carne asada. It was huge and the tortilla was so fresh and perfect. It is hard to believe that a better tortilla can be found anywhere. The filling consisted of large chunks of meat with a little potato, onions etc with a little salsa verde plopped on it. It was downright delicious. Habanero's restaurant serves a great asada burrito, but not as good as this one at Alice's. Everything at Alice's is cooked fresh and is homemade. It is like being in your Mexican aunt's cocina. I witnessed the making of a torta and they scooped fresh avocado out and spread it on the bun. The breakfast burrito was cooked special in the pan right before your eyes and had a ton of eggs and meat in it. They do offer smaller burritos for $3.75. Either way, for the money, the quantity and quality is a great value. People talk about the big burritos at Go Burger, but I have eaten there several times and can attest that they do not compare to those made at Alice the Burrito Lady. While this is not a comfortable sit-down restaurant, if you are a burrito aficionado you must make a pilgrimage to Alice the Burrito Lady soon. Simply, the Best! [26 Jan 2009 16:51:58]
