THE HEART OF LAS CRUCES Managed, run, and owned by two Las Cruces natives, this restaurant is the heart and soul of Las Cruces. Hidden on Madrid Street by Apodaca Park and Baseball Field. This actual NOOK of a restaurant sells fresh-off-the-grill hand-made patty burgers prepared right before your eyes by the owners, with fresh veggies, Las Cruces green chile, and even toasted buns heated right on the grill. These ladies also love the community and regularly give sponsorships to Las Cruces High School Athletics. The burgers are truly made with love at a very modest price. The burgers range from bite size to triple meat huge creations that will truly make your day! I LOVE THIS PLACE.

Nice People, Great Burgers, But Be Prepared to Wait!! The Burger Nook on Madrid is a little hole-in-the-wall place with about six tables and perhaps two more in a tiny adjoining room. It is not uncomfortable. The place is clean and the kitchen area very clean. It obviously is a labor of love with the women running it...more than simply a job. This is pretty much a popular place with the blue-collar locals. It gets very, very busy for such a small operation; the reason being the great burgers, the good prices, and the very pleasant women that run the place and do the cooking. The two owners had one other lady helping with the cooking when I arrived at noon on Saturday. This may have been a mistake. There was a constant flow of people coming in to pick up their takeout orders. The woman at the counter was keeping a notebook with all the orders and they were making everything to order right down the list. I was probably about eighth or tenth on the list. No one in the place seemed to be eating-- everyone was waiting for their order. It is claimed that the wait is worth it; I am not so sure because it took a full half-hour for my food to be prepared. The owner apologized for the long wait. I read the complete Sports Illustrated while waiting! If you can get in at an off hour this might be a good place to grab a meal. The menu is very limited. They have some burritos and hot dogs, but this is primarily a burger place. Burgers (a small or normal sized version) are about 90 cents, four for about $2.00!! Then they have the "Great Burgers," a lot of meat on a large bun. You can get one, two, or three patties of high quality beef. I had one patty for about $2.50. I ordered fries and a coke. The fries were very good, made fresh. The burger was excellent...with onion, chopped lettuce, and green chile. It was, with the chile, very spicy. A great burger. Was it worth the wait? Probably not! If I could get in at an off hour and get my food in, say, 10 minutes... I would be a regular. I am going to, unfortunately, rate the service a two because of my long wait (and everyone else seemed to be in the same boat). This should not be construed in any way as a slight to the ladies who run the place. They are as hardworking and pleasant as they could be...they are just too successful for the size of their operation and the locals are willing to wait. I am not. I will probably try again at an off time. [01 Apr 2006 20:13:30]
