Excellent This is the best Steak and Seafood Restaurant in Grant County. It is pricey. My wife and I enjoy the Lobster Tail dinner which is priced at Market. (in May 2004 it was $35/plate). The steaks runs in the teens are a worth every penny. We haven’t had a bad meal there yet. Casual attire is OK but they do have cloth tablecloths so it’s not just a family steak house. It is located in a restored 1800’s saloon. They have old photos of Silver City on the walls and are connected to the Opera House next door. (The melodramas in the Opera House next door are often bawdy and not appropriate for children) I know of people who come to the Buckhorn from Tucson ,AZ (200 miles away) for dinner on the weekends. It’s that good. [04 Jun 2004 18:35:56]

Best place to eat in the area The staff is exceptional at the Buckhorn and they make the trip worthwhile.
They serve the best hamburgers I've ever eaten. Absolutely fabulous. And their french fries are REAL, not frozen ones. What a find!
In the dining room, everything we've ever eaten there is fantastic. We usually save the dining room for company, as we don't want to burn out on it. (It would be real easy to not eat anywhere else.)
Prices are no higher than for a like place in a big city and I think that is remarkable, given the remoteness.
The only complaints we have are the miserable chairs in the bar and those UGLY statues. [13 Jul 2004 12:55:07]

Quality food and atmosphere! Best hamburgers I've ever eaten, and with real "potato" french fries too. Filet mignon very good as well. Love the hot fresh sourdough bread. Atmosphere is rustic, feels like stepping back in time. Service is good most of the time. Reservations required, since dining rooms are small. Fireplace makes nice ambience. Entertainment is always refreshing too. [10 Apr 2005 18:10:01]

Best Baby Back Ribs in New Mexico I can't get past the ribs, but my wife experiments with other dishes and has never been disapointed. The salads are fresh and crispy. We enjoy the Old West atmosphere and the nice fire in the winter. If you are near PA don't miss dinner at the Buckhorn! [27 Oct 2006 15:47:45]

Unique, but awful in many ways Yes, the place has amazing charm, and as a local, I wouldn't be without it! But don't expect much in the way of actual dining. Service is atrocious, food just okay. Eat in the bar if you can, as the restaurant is frightfully expensive, and the food no better than in the bar. Enjoy the buffalo head on the wall, forgive them for the pathetic and politically-obnoxious "Indian Joe" mannequin at the bar. A slice of history appears in the many b/w photos in the "party room" off the bar, and in the huge risque oil paintings of local ladies of the night. Great fireplace in season and live music most nights. [19 Mar 2007 11:41:48]

Go for the Experience...Not the Food!! If you go to Pinos Altos and dine at the Buckhorn Saloon, make certain you are going for the experience of saying you were there. The food is not worth the trip or the price. Which is not to say the food is bad: It is just mediocre! The bar is dark and not the most comfortable place in the world. When the evening sun was streaming thru the windows you could see a lot of flies buzzing about. Not an encouraging sign. The restrooms were tolerably clean...could have been improved! The dining room on the south side is nice with red table cloths, white cloth napkins, and a candle on each table. A beamed ceiling and fire places at each end of the dining room makes for a nice setting. The service is OK...tolerable if a little inefficient and slow. The waitress did come by a second time to ask how the food was. But, no offer to refill our drinks! The place does a good business for dinner...mostly Anglo types in the 50-70 age bracket. The bread was served fresh out of the oven. It was pretty good, but nothing to write home about. The salads were fresh and crisp. The homemade dressings were good. I would rate the salad above average for a dinner salad. The fries with the steaks were OK. The big disappointment was the steaks. They were priced about the average...certainly not cheap at $22-26 a steak. But, you can clearly get a much better steak at a lower price at the Texas Roadhouse or Outback. The filet and the NY strip were seasoned with no decent steak seasoning and they were somewhat tasteless. Not juicy at all. The steaks were not horrible, but not very good. If you go I would recommend "ribs." The fact that this place does so well is a testament to two things: the historic nature of the old saloon and the lack of fine dining in the Silver City area! (You might want to try Isaac's downtown Silver City.) [14 Jun 2007 12:49:15]
