Absolutely Worth the Wait This is the most quaint and unique restaurant in the Southwest. The short flight of stairs takes you up to an old fashioned authentic Texas steakhouse. You get a bowl of peanuts when you sit and are asked to throw the shells on the floor! The kids loved it. The service and food was terrific. Steaks were cooked perfectly, better than anywhere we had ever been. [10 Jul 2003 15:30:02]

Don't Plan to Eat Here! After hearing so many great things about this place, we couldn't wait! But guess what - we waited for one hour in the bar (arriving at 5pm the opening hour) we climbed up 2 flights of stairs and sat down placing our orders immediately.
Then we waited - 90 min to then be served 2 meals - there were 6 of us. The waitress had no clue who had ordered what and when challenged that the 2 meals served were incorrect - she insisted and plopped them down anyway. Then said the other 4 meals would be along "in a minute". Then we find out our 6 meals were "accidentally" served to someone else and our other 4 meals would now be 10 to 15 minutes. After 20 minutes we sought assistance from the manager and she said it had been a mistake and it would only be a few more minutes that this doesn't happen at "Texas Reds". Well we now waited another 30 minutes while our waitress stormed back and forth by our table, obviously very upset that we had called in the manager (customers right to seek assistance?). At the end of the 30 minutes we decided that after a total of 2+ hours we could do better somewhere else. We suggest you save yourself the misery of "waiting" for the waitstaff to get-it-right and head for the great Deli at the south end of town! [29 Dec 2001 19:50:17]

Best Steaks In New Mexico I absolutely love the food at this place. On one hot day in 2000, our car broke down in the middle of nowhere on the way between Eagles Nest and Red River. We walked 10 miles, mostly uphill, along the hot road to get to this place. Trust me, it was worth it. Beware though that they do not take reservations. This shouldn't be a problem though. Just make sure to call ahead before leaving home and they'll put you on the waiting list. As long as you do this, you won't have much of a wait. [14 May 2002 18:12:28]

Go somewhere else! Overpriced and way over rated. This place might have been good one time but it definately has slip to the bottom of the heap. [26 Dec 2003 14:28:07]

This restaurant is a tradition for my family. We eat there every year, and I have never been dissapointed. There is a long wait, but you can put your name down and walk around town. The steaks are outstanding! [17 Mar 2004 14:14:36]

Texas Red's reopened Just to let everyone know - they did burn down and have rebuilt - 1 story only and no bar to hang out in while you wait. The only thing I have ever ordered there the many times I have been is the Special Cut NY Strip and it is one of the best steaks anywhere. My only complaint - no shrimp cocktail! How is that possible at a steak house? [21 Sep 2005 18:33:24]

Texas Red's has moved from Red River, NM to just down the road to Eagle Nest, NM (due to a fire in Nov. 2004). We were never at the Red River location-- so I can't offer comparisons, but we were told the menu remains unchanged. Our name was put on the waiting list and we had a 45 minute wait (we were told 15 minute wait). Staffing shortage seems to be the problem-- hence the reluctance to seat parties that couldn't be properly accomodated by the wait staff (this is preferable to being stranded at an unattended table.) Just relax-- hey, it's a resort town and you are on vacation. As appetizers, we had roasted green chili strips (3 whole chiles grilled) and stuffed jalopenos (6) (homemade-- not frozen from a food service supplier). We both had the ribeye- steaks were really good for the price. This is not Ruth's Chris, Morton's, the Palm, etc. but the prices were a very good value ($16.00 for 6 oz. ribeye/salad/side/bread). We had the wild rice, which was really good and was not Uncle Ben's. The baked potato was just ordinary. Their special salad dressing was good and a nice change from the usual ranch or blue cheese. Had a great and inspired cocktail list (including Dom Perignon and 15 or 20 domestic and international beers). I had never seen a Roy Rogers or Shirley Temple (for the kids) on a menu before! Good value for the money-- so relax, enjoy your vacation and enjoy a nice steak. P.S.: they had buffalo and quail and elk on the menu ... [09 Oct 2005 21:47:27]
