Not the best
The food was disgraceful. The service was deplorable. The staff ignored tables (the few that were full). No locals were eating at the steakhouse, when I inquired they said most of their business is from travelers staying at the next door hotels. The locals obviously smartened up to the fact the food is bad at best.

The food took forever to get to the table even though only a few tables were filled. The steak was tough. The special enchiladas were dry and chewy.    [20 May 2004 15:58:34]

Past Glory
I'm a local that used to enjoy this restaurant. In a fit of pique at many of the restaurant's employees the owners fired everyone on the spot and closed its doors for several months.
Upon re-opening the food and service never returned to their former quality. As the previous review said, we locals tried it again (once).
The steaks were poorly cooked and the other dishes were equally uninspired.
The owners need a full re-vamp (again) and a re-grand opening if they ever want to the locals back.    [04 Jun 2004 17:26:48]

Not Worth It
My husband and I stayed at the Econo Lodge, which is nearby. I had the 8 oz. New York strip and my husband had prime rib. Mine was good and cooked correctly, but my husband wasn't too happy with his. On top of that, the price for our meals did not match what was on the table. We spent almost $50, and the food definitely was NOT worth it.    [23 Jan 2005 18:53:29]

Never again!
I stayed at a nearby hotel for business and went in to the Red Barn. I ordered Fried Chicken and they brought out chicken fried steak. After waiting 20 minutes for my correct meal, I started eating my chicken and discovered that it was entirely frozen on the inside. I wasn't charged for anything but the management did not apologize and was not too concerned.
Our waiter was new and he was very nice.    [23 Mar 2005 15:27:50]

Maybe I'm getting old, but...
Years ago (18 to be exact) we visited SC for 2 mo/yr over a 5 year period and would often eat here. Last month I returned and found the luster gone. The salad bar had miserly plates, the steak was small and uninvitingly presented, but tender, and the staff, while polite, was clearly confused about their duties. I do not think it is as bad as some of the other reviewers, but oh, for the good ol’ days!    [05 Feb 2006 20:37:25]

Don't do it!
If you eat here, make sure you order something deep-fried... at least anything on it will be dead.    [10 Jun 2006 12:45:31]

Not so bad
We have eaten there three or four times this summer. Small steaks and fried fish. The fries are frozen, bread is not fresh made, veggies overcooked. The salad bar was good for the price. The food was served promptly so was hot. We had enchiladas last summer. For a hotel restaurant is is pretty good. It is pretty old and scrungy, but is always open. Most of the help are a little too casual. One good waiter.    [17 Aug 2006 22:44:01]

A Dump!
Think Golden Corral without the class. The steaks were tough and tasteless and the side dishes were portioned out with a teaspoon-- except for the canned vegetables. Expect to pay extra for everything, including a cup of coffee after the meal and drinks. Don't use the bathroom before you eat if you want to keep your appetite. No wonder the locals don't eat here.    [07 Jun 2007 22:56:08]

First time and last
As a pair of prospective new residents to Silver City, my wife and I made a visit and decided to try The Red Barn Family Steakhouse. From outside, it looked like a decent local place.

Inside, was a different story. The restaurant is a tad dingy, and the staff is quasi-friendly--at best. After getting my order wrong (how hard is it to screw up a hamburger?), it took another 15 minutes to get my food.

The manager was considered and did discount our meal, but the experience overall will linger if the thought of ever eating there again surfaces in my mind.    [29 Jul 2007 20:42:21]

Consistancy? Well they couldn't..........
Food was ok, except for the toast. What does it take to screw up TOAST? Did it get cold and then put in the toaster to "warm it up"? It was like eating bread that they were getting ready to make croutons out of. Completely dry and no amount of butter could make up for it.    [09 Sep 2007 23:41:35]
