A Route 66 Classic! If you're in Tucumcari, there are two things you absolutely must do:
1. Stay at the beautifully restored Blue Swallow Motel. 2. Eat at the restaurant with the big sombrero on top.
The aforementioned restaurant, La Cita, is exceptional. The food is great, the service excellent, the prices reasonable, and the decor just priceless. The hours are a little weird (they close at 8 p.m. during the week and 3 p.m. on Sunday), so you don't want to roll into town too late ... but it's worth making the extra effort to get there. I literally dream about those enchiladas ... and consider it perfectly reasonable to spend 14 hours driving from St. Louis to Tucumcari to get them whenever the mood strikes me.
