Microwave Burgers and Absent Service Quite some time ago I stopped by this restaurant with a few friends a late night, what I assumed would be a nice finish on the evening with a few beers and some food. Not that I expect to get a memorable meal in a place called 'Chili Company', but I found that I still had hugely overestimated what this restaurant had to offer.
A person sitting at the bar, smoking and watching TV informed us that the restaurant is closed. As we pointed out that the place closes at midnight, and we sould have plenty of time to finish a quick burger - we were not planning to stay longer than that, she unwillingly showed us to a table and pretty much threw a couple of menus after us. Then she returned to her cigarette and TV.
For someone who had demonstrated such an urge to get to go home soon, she took a remarkable time to return to the table to take our order. We tried, despite that we felt we had not been treated very well, to be polite and friedly with her. None of that was returned. However, we get to order our food, and the beers were thrown to the table with efficiency.
When the food came up, my 'medium-rare burger' was a gray flop of through cooked meat. I didn't point that out to the waitress when I finally got her to return to our table from her break, but simply asked if I could get a burger not well done.
The waitress grabbed my plate and rushed it to her friend at the bar. This mountain in a t-shirt wet with her sweat, her bare feet in some sort of flip-flops turned out to be the manager. With determination to put us on our place she rolled over to our table and made a speech about how they only serve high quality of food. The whole lithany sounded like something memorized from the company handbook, and we didn't pay much attention. When she mentioned that this is how a microwaved burger looks like, she got my full attention, however.
I didn't want to spend my evening arguing with this woman, and our waitress who both re-took their place at the bar, as I shared my friend's very average fajitas. The beer was good, though. Under the watching eyes of our waitress I left the place at midnight with my friends. The manager locked the door after us.
Like we would come back! [09 Jul 2003 22:09:40]
