Description

Newly opened in October 2000, the restaurant has racked up a very respectable number of positive reviews, including several local newspapers, The New Yorker, and mention in a Gourmet magazine article on restaurants along the 7 train.

In this Tibetan restaurant you will find a few Tibetan customers along with a variety of people interested in trying the new entry to the neighborhood and foodies responding to the reviews. The menu has nearly as many vegetarian dishes as non-vegetarian.

The cuisine, like the country, is situated between China, India and Middle East countries like Afghanistan. But that description is just to give those unfamiliar with Tibetan food an idea of generally what to expect: curries, noodle soups, steamed and fried dumplings. But the food is distinctively Tibetan, just like the bocha tea with butter and salt is different from Chinese or Indian ways of serving tea.

Hearty is used in the menu to describe a few of the stew/soup dishes and that is generally appropriate for Himalayan food. It goes well with the steamed bread which is similar to that found in some Chinese restaurants but here it is oozing with butter.

The recently (by a prior tenant, a Korean restaurant) renovated space is a bit austure but casual with wait help in jeans and a large portrait of the Dali Lama above and off to the side from the 46" TV set.
