Awesome I have been to hundreds of restaurants in all fifty states - maybe over a thousand - but none like Uncle Buck's. I walked in and there are bikers with their colored jackets, lawyers in suits and local grandparents with the kids all having a conversation like everyone sitting at their home dinnig table.
The food is really fabulous - fried frog legs, wings with choice of 30 sauces, escargot, snow crab bigger than I've seen anywhere, a half pound bison burger that most take half home with them.
This place is in a small town in NE Ohio next to Mosquito Lake: funny name and none in sight. Uncle Buck comes out of the kitchen and talks to everyone. Really nice guy , and to look at him you would think he is your brother-in-law but actually he is a chef in casual clothes. He brings out new dishes that are very different from the norm and asks customers to taste and give their opinion. He makes everything from scratch and I mean it; his mayo to cutting his steaks from a hind quarter this guy is old school. He tells people how he started as a dishwasher for three years before line cooking. His fried fish is the best anyone in my party have ever had. He mixes flour garlic and cajun seasoning in the correct porportions and fries it perfectly. He says the liquid from the fish creates the breading and it's thin and great.
I'm pretty picky but this place is on my road map forever. [18 Jul 2006 14:04:28]
