Top: United States: OH: Lima Description Part of a small chain with six locations in Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin. Before WW II, there were over 200 Kewpee restaurants, each run independently and often with different menus, however the shortage of ground beef during the war drove many locations out of business. At attempt to collect royalties/franchise fees for the name bought by a Toledo man led to further closures and changes to the name at some locations, including a Flint, MI based chain now called Halo Burgers. Often cited in the attached reviews, will be a mention that Wendy's founder Dave Thomas grew up in Kalamazoo, MI near a Kewpee restaurant that sold square hamburgers and malts and in an interview stated that this inspired him to go into the restaurant business. Started under the name of Kewpee Hotel Hamburgs was reported to first opened in Flint, MI Kewpee Hotel during the 1920s by Sam Blair. Some of the early Kewpee locations had an white art deco look, similar to another restaurant with smaller square hamburgers and malts started earlier in the 1920s. This Kewpee location in downtown Lima, Ohio, opened in 1928, is the only remaining example of the "original" Kewpee building architecture. The original parking lot had an operational car turntable, prior to the expansion of the parking lot. Former Lima residents sometimes return to the city just for a visit to Kewpee Hamburgers. Unless you consider the Kewpee Vegetable sandwich –lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle on a hamburger bun – (which as far as I know has always been on their menu, and also as far as I know, no-one has ever ordered) vegetarian fare, that feature is pretty misleading. [22 Jun 2005 15:57:11] MmMmm... YUMMY Their hamburgers dipped in their chili is SUPER (not to mention their malts as well).... I have a Kewpee hamburger wrapper framed in my office as well. [28 Jun 2005 14:21:03] Not bad, but... Can't Be Beat!! When visiting family members in Lima, I definitely have to make a stop (or two, or three...) at the Kewpee. Incredible food. Incredible service.
