Description
Kewpee HamburgersPart of a small chain with six locations in Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin. Before WW II, there were over 200 Kewpee restaurants each run independently and often with different menues, however the shortage of ground beef during the war drove many locations out of business. At attempt to collect royalties/franchise fees for the name bought by a Toledo man led to further closures and changes to the name at some locations, including a Flint, MI based chain now called Halo Burgers. Often cited in the attached reviews, will be a mention that Wendy's founder Dave Thomas grew up in Kalamazoo, MI near a Kewpee restaurant that sold square hamburgers and malts and in an interview stated that this inspired him to go into the restaurant business. Started under the name of Kewpee Hotel Hamburgs was reported to first opened in Flint, MI Kewpee Hotel during the 1920's by Sam Blair. Some of the early Kewpee locations had an white art deco look, similar to another restaurant with smaller square hamburgers and malts started earlier in the 1920's.
This Kewpee location in downtown Lima, Ohio, opened in 1928, is the only remaining example of the "original" Kewpee building architecture. The original parking lot had an operational car turntable, prior to the expansion of the parking lot. Former Lima residents sometimes return to the city just for a visit to Kewpee Hamburgers. Home page Web link to the left is for the Racine, WI location which shows some additional information on Kewpee hamburgers.

This is the best memory I have I grew up in Lima Ohio Moved in 1991 and have missed Kewpee's Hamburgers almost as much as my best friend.. I now live in Roanoke Va and hate it. its not Lima!! So when I get the chance to get to Lima I always go to Kewpee before I do anything else. I MISS IT SO MUCH [30 Jul 2004 20:34:05]

Don't insult Kewpee by comparing it to Wendy's No comparison. Kewpee is like Wendy's but good. The best burger joint on the planet. I have driven 92 miles for a Kewpee! [08 Dec 2004 01:09:22]

Best Burger Around I've traveled to many countries and states. The Kewpee burger in Lima is the BEST. I grew up in Lima and enjoyed Kewpee burgers and the malts. I always go there when I come back to visit. I wonder if the burgers can be shipped OVERNIGHT? I know of someone who got his White Castle burgers that way. [22 Mar 2005 11:25:13]

The Best Kewpee is by far the best place to get a burger. I do not know how anyone could rate it a four. I am away at college and have yet to find anything that compares. My siblings and I always stop at Kewpee when visiting home. Simply put, it's the best. [11 Apr 2005 02:07:33]

Fry's dipped in malt, it started in Lima You can't go wrong with a chesseburger, fry, malt, and a rootbeer. (their ice makes the rootbeer even better, i know sounds weird) First timers are given the suggestion of getting a burger with everything (I mean EVERYTHING!) a fry and a malt. If you come within 20 miles of Lima, Ohio you deserve to stop in for a Kewpee. (three locations)And for the price ($1.50 for a burger, .80 for a fry, 5 bucks is all you need) [30 Apr 2005 08:07:01]

I've driven 300 miles for a kewpee Kewpee hamburgers are the best, hands down. Before Wendy's appeared (resembling the Kewpee only by the shape of the burger, frosty malt and chili on the menu) the Kewpee didn't even serve fries. They didn't have to. For a takeout meal people would drive through the downtown Kewpee (circa 1967) for 25¢ burgers, then swing through McDonald's for the 12¢ fries.
I have one problem with your sidebar summary. Unless you consider the Kewpee Vegetable sandwich –lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle on a hamburger bun – (which as far as I know has always been on their menu, and also as far as I know, no-one has ever ordered) vegetarian fare, that feature is pretty misleading. MmMmm... YUMMY Kewpee Hamburgers are by far the best burgers I have tasted. I no longer live in Lima, OH but whenever I visit I make it a point to eat at Kewpee.
Their hamburgers dipped in their chili is SUPER (not to mention their malts as well)....
I have a Kewpee hamburger wrapper framed in my office as well. [28 Jun 2005 14:21:03]

Not bad, but... The Kewpee is pretty good; Kewpee is old school, better food & more variety at another place. [11 Jul 2005 05:55:23]

Can't Be Beat!! Fresh burgers on fresh buns...thick-cut fries...hot chili...delicious pies...thick malts.
When visiting family members in Lima, I definitely have to make a stop (or two, or three...) at the Kewpee. Incredible food. Incredible service. [05 Aug 2005 13:06:10]
