Best Chinese on East Side by Far
The food is consistently delicious, full of flavor and not overpowering as some other chinese restaurants can be. The beauty is that whether you like it spicy or mild, you can get ANY dish on their menu without compromising flavor.The restaurant itself is quaint and romantic, with dim lights, nice jazz music (kudos to whoever picked the music), and a very friendly (but not obnoxiously firendly) staff. what is strange to me, though, is that it seems that there are more people doing take-out from the place than dining in. The phones are always ringing and there are always so many people waiting up front to pick up their take out. More people taking out than dining in? that just doesn't make sense to me. their carryout is good, don't get me wrong, but it doesn't even compare with the dining-in experience. fresh food, good service, lovely music, plenty of nice wines to choose from. this is definitely the BEST KEPT secret, the PEARL, of the east side.    [13 Aug 2006 01:34:20]

Definitely a gem
John, I agree with you wholeheartedly. The Pearl of the Orient is traditional, yet amazing. I never get tired of their food! More people need to find out about this secret. Not only is it an independent, family owned establishment, this restaurant has lasted for SUCH a long time, it's definitely a gem.
