Cornbeef and cabbage We just returned from the lovely William Penn Inn and had a very nice time. Most of the food was good but the Cornbeef and Cabbage should have been left off the menu or tasted before being served. The cabbage and broth were flavorful along with the very small portion of potato (singular). The cornbeef was the toughest meat I have encountered in a long long time. I am shocked that a chef would let this leave their kitchen. I mentioned this to the very nice server and she offered something else which I refused. The host apologized and offered free dessert which never materialized as a freebe. Unfortunately two of three guests ordered the Cornbeef and Cabbage and were very unhappy with their entree. The third guest ordered polenta seared scallops and was quite happy with their dish. The desserts were excellent. The chef should have done a better job overseeing what leaves his kitchen or what does not leave his kitchen. [17 Mar 2003 17:56:38]

Bad meals & service We recently had dinner at the Wm. Penn Inn. We opted for the Prime Rib. Both meals were so fat-filled that they were inedible. When asked the waitress how the meal was, I told her they were really bad. She laughed. I asked what was funny as we were serious. She said she thought that we were kidding. No effort was made to reconcile the complaint and I paid full price before leaving. We lodged a written complaint with the maitre d' which was ignored. [22 Nov 2006 20:08:39]

Stickup at William Penn Inn I had the worst dining experience of my life this afternoon. The Cabernet Sauvignon wine was poor and the glass contained less than the norm of five ounces. The waiter was even stingier with the water. I had to ask each time for a refill. The duck was so miserable that I thought it had died of AIDS. The dessert, a no brainer, was vanilla ice cream, served as if it were on the endanger species list. The hostess was a mess and hostile. Season's 'beatings'. This oyce magnificent restaurant has become a ripoff joint. The absentee owner explains much of the old saying that when the cat is away the mice will play. We left angry, hungry, and exhausted since we had to travel a long distance to and fro to this fourth rate outfit. [17 Dec 2006 16:04:05]

Always a good meal I didn't plan to write a review here but felt I must stick up for one of my fav dining spots.I find it so out of character for this great rest to have such poor reviews. My wife and I have eaten here at least 50x and I can truly say only 3-4 have been slightly disappointing.I've had my employees here for holiday parties and they all have raved about the style and quality of this restaurant. The early bird menu is an incredable bargain. Sorry for the other reviewers but I think the Wm.Penn is tops. [20 Jan 2007 16:04:23]

A truly lovely meal I agree with Mr. Byrne (above) who defended the Wm Penn Inn. We had not been here for a few years, but we returned in mid-Jan 2007 to celebrate my mother in law's birthday. We had a party of 7 and were treated to attentive service, excellent food that was beautifully presented, lovely music in the upstairs room, and an overall wonderful experience. Sorry other people's experiences were not good, but ours was stellar. [11 Mar 2007 22:22:29]

Bad dining experience Upon arrival my wife and I had to wait twenty minutes to be seated, they could not figure out what happened to my reservation, then we got a table situated in what looked like a hallway, the service was incredibly slow, and the waitress an ignorant idiot, as for the food: my wife meal was edible but forgetable, I had fresh oysters followed by an duck so dry it was unedible and the sauce that came with it supposed to be made with Chambor liquor tasted like a bad tasting cold medecine. The response to my complains was snotty remarks and ignorance. I'll remember this place as a ripoff [07 Oct 2007 15:44:57]

A throwback... This place has been around forever and it is definitely a period piece. Dine here and return to the days of the 1950s when "continental" cuisine (whatever that was) was considerfed the height of culinary excellence. This is a temple of overpriced, oversauced, pseudo-French cooking. It is OK if that is what you want - topped off with a salad bar - a real throwback to the 1970s! Take your great-grandparents---they will love it or go if you want to see why everyone loved crab imperial in 1965! Service is usually pleasant and attentive, but a real "foodie" will be miserable here. [29 Oct 2007 16:16:53]
