Best sandwich dive in the US? I haven't tried them all, but don't feel like I'm going out on a limb declaring Big Jim's the best.
The original owner Big Jim was immense. When he sat by the register himself he used two bar stools. Easily 350 pounds.
This was not a man who embraced the concept of "portion control". And his restaurant is still run with strict "portions out of control" guidelines. Massive amounts of meat on sandwiches, more spaghetti than a Nigerian village could eat in a month, the "small" fish sandwich will remind you of Jonah. Get the (big) picture?
There isn't any "ambiance". This is a little family dive down in Greenfield for Pete's sake. Head to Shadyside if you want ambiance. Expect a softball team to come in roaring for pitchers in the summer and a hockey team to come in roaring for pitchers in the winter.
It's like the Beach Boys said, "We'll have fun, fun, fun..." Enjoy the ride. [25 Jan 2005 15:54:20]
