Excellent I have been to Spence Cafe 5 times in the last month. After the first 2 times I brought my husband. He loves it too. For lunch the filet chesesteak is the best ever. The dinner menu has so many great choices it is hard to deside and the reason I return so often. The sauces and side dishes are a real change from the ordinary. My husband said the oysters are the best he ever had. I only wish they would put the pork mojo back on the menu. [06 Nov 2003 09:07:04]

Don't Miss it! Spence Cafe is undoubtedly the best restaurant, in all respects, in the greater West Chester area. It is somewhat unpretentious in appearance, but the food is superb, and service is always good. Meals, both at lunch and dinner, are always well presented, and portions are ample. Their filet mignon and salmon both are top notch for dinner, and their filet cheesesteak is in a class of its own for lunch. Overall, it's a great place to dine - we live about 25 miles away, and it's well worth the trip for the food. [29 Sep 2004 18:32:31]

Delicious food from a cafe rich with history! My husband and I went to Spence Cafe last evening and had a wonderful meal. He had scallops and lobster for the appetizer and swordfish for dinner. I had the tomato florentine soup with jumbo lump crabmeat, and three oysters for an appetizer. For dinner I dined on the rainbow trout stuffed with crabmeat. The food was incredible and the sauce accompaniments were superb! The wine list was excellent. Although reservations are suggested, we arrived at 7pm and were promptly seated. We are planning another trip to West Chester, just to visit the Spence Cafe! The desserts looked amazing, but we just couldn't afford the room. [05 Dec 2004 14:51:13]

Not so good We sat outside, nice atmosphere, great service. The Lobster bisque was very good, Caesar Salad also. For the main course I ordered Crusted Red Snapper. The food arrived promptly, the appearance was exceptional. The fish was unbelievably overcooked, rather like rubber (the worst I've seen). The dish was replaced with duck, which had mashed potatoes and beans. This was average. Not impresswed with the quality for $24. The waitress said that she had mixed reviews of the Red Snapper, with another person having sent it back. She also said the Chef would not admit to the mistake. Too bad we will not return. Management - :-( The food is okay. Service is so so and I am amazed based on management that they are still in business. In my most recent visit when I was charged $ 7.50 for soda, I questioned the charge...the way the bartender responded was in a very impolite. Actually, the response was "No one else complains....it's the Policy! You don't get free refills at a convenience store." I guess no one told the bartender that we were at a "FINE" dining restaurant. Anyway, I was highly upset, I paid my bill, but because I was upset by the rude, brash response I received from the bartender, I did not leave a tip...normally I tip 20 % or better. What happened next was so shocking that I am still astonished; the bartender chased me out in the parking lot and was yelling at me and calling me vulgarities for not leaving a tip. I then tried to call to talk with the owner to tell him/her what happened and this same girl said he was not in and not to call here anymore. I called later in hopes to get his/her name and she told me his name and told me not to call back anymore. Later in the evening, I did eventually speak with the owner after speaking with another manager. I did appreicate the return call from the owner, but my overall analysis of the conversation with the owner from my perspective was that he could have handled the complaint with more compassion. I definitely will not go back, not because of the food or the service - but because of the lack of professionalism by management. [01 Mar 2007 10:07:56]
