My new favorite hang out! My father works for a very luxurious chocolate company, so I knew I was going some place amazing when HE took me to a chocolate shop. Turns out he's befriended the owner and wishes he had opened such a shop a long time ago. My spoiled taste buds were NOT disappointed!
With [chocolate] brown and orange decor, Haute Chocolate Cafe is a modern Chocolate bar of sorts. You can buy delicious chocolates pre-packaged (including a chocolate stiletto! what more could a girl ask for?) or pick out a selection of Norman Love hand made, hand painted confections (try the peanut butter and jelly truffle! it's amazing!) or you can purchase a variety of in season fruits or marshmellows to dip into the chocolate fountain sitting oh-so-seductively in the corner.
You can also try some of the chocolate pastries or desserts that are hand made and decorated by the owner himself. THey are truly delicious and decadent. Imagine finding heaven on a plate. That's what you find here. You can also try the variety of hot or cold chocolate or espresso beverages - such as the Aztec hot chocolate that has just enough sweet AND spice to take you far far away. No matter what you try - and do try as much as you can - you will only go away smiling. The prices are reasonable too - for the price of a thawed piece of "cheesecake" at a restaurant ($5-$7 depending on the place) you can get a delicious hand made dessert - you really cant beat it.
One of my most favorite parts of Haute Chocolate is sitting in the giant picture window up front. Neighborhood kids come and dip marshmellows into the chocolate fountain then head outside to sit at the outdoor tables where they proceed to eat their treasure...and get chocolate all over their face at the same time! (I watched one boy lick his plate and get it on his nose!) The smiles and squeals that follow are priceless. I cant wait to bring a camera to snap some shots of the type of pure joy that isnt seen in this world enough anymore.
No matter what type of craving you are looking to satisfy - a sweet tooth, some relaxation or some soul soothing, you will find it within the chocolate and orange world of Haute Chocolate Cafe! [13 Jun 2006 10:16:48]

I have visited this place twice now and am not overly thrilled with it. As someone who frequents NYC often this is just a copy of The Chocolate Bar even down to the color scheme. The customer service has been fairly poor both times. I almost walked out the second time as a group of people were there together and while one was in front of me the others were not. The lady in front of me proceeded to let all 8 other people join her and the owner didn't say a word. All I wanted was a simple milkshake.
The Norman Love chocolates are delish but they are done in Miami not by the owners. [27 Jul 2006 09:41:39]

A loyal customer... It seems that everyone I know orders the Frozen Hot Chocolate (milkshake), but my favorite is the Pina Colada shake, which is coconut ice cream with pineapple juice. Also, the pastries and home-made desserts are awesome, especially (when available) the Pot De Creme. The Brownie Cookies rock too! So I recommend trying something from the dessert case. These are all home-made.
Oh, and even though this is something I normally don't care about, Haute Chocolate Cafe's restroom is something to see. It's the funniest restroom that I've ever been in... very clever. I can't explain it, you just have to see what I'm talking about for yourself. [30 Jul 2006 00:26:14]

Why Didn't Someone Think of This Before? I am in love with this place. It's relatively small inside, but so awesome. They have wacky orange bar stoolish chairs that you can change the height of (but you sit at normal tables, not a bar), and orange walls. Inside, it smells intensely of chocolate. They even have a large chocolate fountain...you pay for a pretzel rod, a marshmallow, whatever, and you can dip it in the fountain. They have tons of crazy chocolate bars and under the glass they have these colorful gourmet chocolates from Florida, in all kinds of flavors. They seriously look like they were made of blown glass and hand painted. But what me and Lisa have been going there for is the shakes. Their speciality is a cold "hot chocolate" shake. It's amazing, and really doesn't taste like your typical milkshake. (And they make the ice cream there...probably why it's so good). Megan was at this place the other day after I recommended it to her and she goes, "oh i loved it, and the bathroom was really funny." I hadn't visited the bathroom yet, so I didn't know what she meant...and OMG, it was hilarious. It's only a one person bathroom, but the walls are white with random bright orange splotches all over them. And the owners write stuff in sharpie all over the walls. For example, when you're sitting on the toilet and looking straight ahead, they drew on the wall so it looks like a sheet of paper. It says, "For those of you sitting down, here are some things to remember...1.) Don't try too hard 2.) If you don't get to read everything on the walls, it's okay...just come back and visit us again 3.) Just because we write on our walls, doesn't mean you can." And there was more there...I just can't remember. Then on the wall there's a hook. It says next to it, "If you don't want to put your purse on the floor, you can hang it here. If you forget to take it when you leave, don't worry. We spend less on your credit cards than you do." Then, there's an arrow pointing to the roll of toilet paper that simply says, "important papers ------->". Above the toilet there's one that says, "This one is for the guys. Here at Haute Chocolate, we aim to please. Will you aim too, please?" And below that, like right above the toilet, it says, "Hey! You're facing the wrong way! Turn around!" Made out of orange paint, there's a huge picture of a really weird face, and above it, it says, "You'd look like this too if you were in the bathroom all the time." Above the mirror it says, "You're beautiful...now go out there and eat some chocolate!" And right above the door (of the bathroom) it says, "Thank you! We hope you enjoyed your stay!" I just got a kick of it. I was in there forever seriously laughing out loud and reading everything. I think there was still more than what I said.

Wonderful I took my husband there for our anniversary, very good. The owner was there and she was a very nice helpful lady. I had the dark chocolate creme brule. Makes me slobber to think about it.
Next time I'm visiting the bathroom! [29 Aug 2006 17:31:53]

sweet comfort with style The anonymous comment on July 27th frustrates me...while the color scheme is very similar, I would definitely not say that it is just a copy by any means. Haute Chocolate Cafe is a welcomed addition to West Reading and I don't think that the chocolate bar in NYC has a disco ball in it... and as far as this "I go to NYC often,"mentality, great, so do I and I visit different bakeries (not just magnolia) and I love this cafe! It could stand up to any NYC bakery/cafe.. i have never had anything there i haven't loved and the service is always very personal and the staff is very helpful in suggesting different items. the pastry case is always filled with the yummiest homemade comforts yet highly creative...if you eat too much you can spread out on a sofa and on pretty days you can sit outside and enjoy chocolate and sunshine. sometimes there is a wait, but there is plenty to check out and with some patience you will be served in a timely manner. there are plenty of different chocolate bars available for fun gifts. we need this!!! Birthday Party I went here for my birhday party. It was AMAZING! It's something great to do if you wanna hang out with your friends on your birthday, too old for any kiddy stuff, and are tired of birthday sleepovers! It was soo much fun, you should most definetly try it! [26 Feb 2007 17:48:35]
