Great Food Served by Great People
Over the past eight months my wife and I have been eating here regularly. The menu is varied, with specials every evening. Food is always hot, well prepared, and well presented. Served by a wait staff that is friendly and very attentive, but not to the point of being overbearing. This restaurant also hosts wine dinners regularly, with a superb five course meat. The wine list is quite adequate and reasonable.    [11 Feb 2000 17:29:46]

A positive experience every time
As of June 2002 with either my wife, or with my wife and friends, I have frequented this establishment about 6 times. Each time, I've had nothing but positive experiences. The reasonably priced menu has items ranging from a $6 burger, to a $24 lamb dish, and the wine list is complete. Both the food and service has been exceptional. For an entree, I recommend either the lamb, or the seafood alfredo, and I recommend asking for Steph, daughter of the owner, as your server. The gift-certificate which I recently purchased for my parents returned nothing but praise. There are very few other restaurants where I'd rather spend my evening.    [28 May 2002 22:20:45]

Won't be going back soon
Reading the previous reviews, I wonder if they are friends of the owners..or if the staff was replaced since 2002.
April 2nd, 2005

Party of ten. One waitress for our table.
1. Salad Fresh but waited 15 minutes for the oil and vinegar, which we ended up asking the bus boy to fetch.
2. My sister ordered Fillet Minion medium.. it had to go back 3!! times. The first time it was not even cooked inside.
3. Waitress scolded me for asking for the oil and vingar..." wait till I get all the dishes out" which she did 2 at a time.
Most houses have the staff help get the plates to a large table in one swoop.
4. My fish was dry. It no doubt sat under the lamp waiting for the other dishes.
5. Big no no.. the waitress touches the clients.
At one point she had both her hands on the back of my sisters shoulders while appologizing for the uncooked meat. ( As if she were a relative to us ).    [21 Apr 2005 14:04:46]

Awful Service
I had been looking forward to trying The Glass Onion for a while. I will never go back! I have never been treated worse by a hostess! When we came in she was annoyed that we did not have reservations and that we were willing to wait 20 minutes to sit. Then an older couple came in after us and she said them almost immediately even though they did not have reservations. After 45 minutes we were finally seated. I mentioned that even though they didn't have reservations, they were seated immediately. She then tried to argue that they did have reservations. I didn't say anything because I normally do not like confrontation. So she went over and asked the couple, who said that they did not have reservations. She came back and said that she is just really busy (never apologized). Then said very loudly "Oh are you going to be mad at me now!!". She threw down 2 menus (there were three of us) and stormed away. She was one of the most miserable people I have ever come in contact with. And the food wasn't even good at all! No one finished their meal! I would recommend not wasting your money there! If you do decide to try it, make a reservation because they are not happy if you don't!!!!    [05 Jul 2006 10:26:09]

Varied Menu My @ss
Overpriced, small portions of improperly cooked food. Served in a poorly lit, stale , cavernous environment. Hard to believe the people who run the Canfield House are the proprietors of this disappointment. Having been there 3 times in the past 18 months with each experience only getting worse, this was the coup de grace in bad food and service. Easy Coconut Shrimp app was overcooked to black and rubbery blandness. Lame sauce didnt help. Baked scrod was woefully undercooked. And they refused to remove it from the bill saying it was cooked to "chefs" standards. Yeah, well he wasnt eating it or paying outrageous money for a 4 oz. piece of scrod. I wont even go into the ghastly zuchinni and shriveled black peas side dish. Absolutely unappetizing, gross. Nobody from the kitchen would even come to my table at my request, left it to the brusque waitress who gave lousy service. Only after visiting their small, outdated restroom facilities that reeked like a lions cage, and thats not something new, was I able to extricate myself from that nightmare of a dining experience On the positive side, they do have an exemplary wine selection. I guess with enough good wine and bad lighting you really won't be able to see, or care what your eating. Avoid the Glass Onion if you want an enjoyable dining experience.Been the same menu for the last 3 yrs at least.

Yeah there may have been some variation, but no matter what you get from this place its substandard . From the pork that I was lucky if it was 110 inside to the raw scrod.
Its just a bad scene. Funny to see the reviews of the friends. The real diners know better....    [28 May 2007 04:38:48]
