Treated like an idiot
I had the misfortune of dining at this place again. And for the 2nd time in a row was treated poorly and did not get what I ordered.

Here is the scenario.

I was with a group of people eating at this establishment. I along with the party I was with all ordered our food. Now I ordered a Delmonico Steak. A few other people at our table ordered the Prime Rib and some others order seafood. So our orders start coming out and one of the people at our table is given my Delmonico. This person starts to eat it as he doesn't realise that he has gotten the wrong dish. A minute later the waitress comes out with a Prime Rib and begins to explain that there has been a mistake and that the person got my Demlonico Steak. So she takes the Delmonico from him, gives him his prime rib, and then tells me that she will re-plate the Delmonico and give it fresh potatos and vegetables.

????

I tell the waitress "NO, I dont want a piece of meat that someone else has eaten part of, cook me a new one."

"well sir, that is going to take a long time to cook. Probably about half an hour"

"Thats fine, we will be here a while anyways, just cook up a new one."

So about 1 minute later the waitress comes back with a prime rib, puts it in front of me and says "Here is your Delmonico sir"

????

I guess the waitress figured I wouldnt be able to tell the difference between the Delmonico and Prime Rib. And being a big beef/steak lover I INSTANTLY could see the difference.

I stared at the waitress in disbelief as she walked away back to the kitchen.

This evening I was with some important clients of mine and did not want to make a scene. So I accepted the Prime Rib and ate that.

Having said all that, the prime rib was decent. BUT NOT WHAT I ORDERED OR ASKED FOR OR SHOULD HAVE BEEN GIVEN.

I will NEVER eat at the Canfield House again, NOR will I recommend it to ANYONE. In fact I am going to tell all of my friends and co-workers to never eat there.

Had they just given me what I ordered and not try to BS me things would have been fine. Alas they didn't.

I mentioned at the top of this review that this is the 2nd time I've been treated poorly. Everytime I've gone I've ordered the Delmonico. And everytime they've screwed up my order in some way. The first time the waitress/chef just forgot to prepare my food and so I had to wait while the rest of my party ate. When they finally brought it out it was VERY rare and not cooked long enough.

The owners should tell their waitstaff that for the prices people pay for the food they should get what they want. Also they should explain to them the differences between the different cuts of beef.

Avoid Canfield House
We didn't even eat here. Our parents had given us a gift certificate (granted it was a few yrs old) but without any expiration date on it. Before we sat down, we double checked w/the manager and he told us he would not honor it. No effort was made by this guy to offer us any kind of discount or retribution. Not to mention he was rude to us on the way out. Based on the other review on this website...this place has other more than just bad managerial problems. I'll never eat/recommend this place to anyone.    [11 Jul 2005 12:13:40]

Gift certificate denial
Walked in to the Canfield House/Patricks Pub with a gift certificate from 1999 which by Rhode Island Law is still acceptable. In fact there is to be no expriation dates on restaurant gift certificates. Should the Owner or management not accept it they are subject to a fine. Regardless the manager at the time whos name I will not mention clearly did not know the Rhode Island law. My wife, brother and a friend were looking forward to a nice meal however were throroughly disappointed when the manager would not accept our $100.00 gift certificate. Any half way decent manager would have either a.) called their supervisor (in this case the owner), b.) accepted the certificate out of good faith, or c.) even if he did not know the law to at least offer partial acceptance of the certificate. Regardless the manager was rude, disrespectful, and clearly did not know anything about RI law with respect to gift certificates. It amazes me that an owner or manager would not know these things. It makes me wonder how the rest of the operation is running. I will never return to this establishment and calls have been made to the BBB and Attorney General. I guess the fact that there were only 4 customers in the restaurant at 6PM should have also been a sign that they weren't a Newport favorite. I would highly suggest that you find alternate dinner plans if in the Newport area.    [11 Jul 2005 12:39:57]

Great place
I have eaten at the Canfield House on numerous occassions and have never had a bad experience. The food is fresh and delicious and the service staff is both knowledgable and pleasant. I also do believe that if a restaurant is under new ownership they are not required by law to honor gift certificates issued by a previous corperation. I think that some may be too quick to judge. The Canfield is one of Newports best places to dine.    [12 Jun 2008 14:00:17]
