Great sushi
This has to be the best sushi I've had in Columbia. Great atmosphere and the staff is very friendly. I recommend asking for Jason if you're new to sushi. He's great at introducing you to new things you wouldn't normally try as well as helping you decide what to order. Great service!! And if you don't know what to order just ask Jason to surprise you!    [18 Feb 2004 11:12:17]

Memorable Miso
Located near the Richland County Library and a few blocks from our beautiful State Capital, Camon is the oldest sushi restaurant in Columbia. Get there before six and enjoy the early bird special which is a real bargain ( five courses and wine for less than ten bucks! ).    [15 Sep 2004 10:26:26]

Camon has lost its flavor, unfortunately
My wife and I used to be big fans of Camon sushi, but we won't be going there any more because of problems with service.
We actually got up and left on our most recent visit. We had ordered some items from the sushi bar to be delivered to our table, along with an appetizer. The waitress -- who we think was Chinese -- came back to the table and told us we ordered way too many items. She actually said, "Is this your first time eating sushi or something?" Very condescending.
My wife is Japanese, so it's definitely not our first time with sushi. In fact, we'd been to Camon several times.
The sushi is good, if you can put up with the cold, unfriendly, unsmiling staff. They also often give you items on the house, which is really nice and lets you try new dishes.
Unfortunately, we won't be returning after the really rude treatment we got on our last visit.    [01 Oct 2006 15:07:25]

Terrible Experience!
Heard how great Camon was and attempted to eat there. After being seated we waited for one hour and had not recieved our order and had asked several times for drink refills that never came. We finally decided to track down our waiter - this would seem easy in a small restaurant- but not at Camon. We told him we never recieved our order he didn't have a clue what had happened or what we had ordered but he presented us with a bill for our beverages. Camon- being gracious - gave us a 10% discount for the drinks but no apology for wasting an hour wating on Sushi that never arrived. My date was very sweet and paid the tab - I wouldn't have been so kind.    [18 Oct 2006 10:51:25]

Best In The South
I have been going to Camon for about 8 years and it is true that the wait-staff, as of late, has been less than desirable but the food is wonderful and the owners seem to be welcoming you into there homes rather than into an Authentic Japanese Restaurant. They have been voted Columbia's Best more times than I can count and if they weren't voted best they were 2nd place. The sushi is the freshest in town and the kitchen dishes are straight from Japan. Many of the Japanese companies in Columbia come here to eat which tells me that if its good enough for them then I am coming in.

There has been a lot of fuss about the newer japanese restaurants in the Vista but none of them are Japanese owned or have stood the 23 years that Camon has. They, also, have an ambiance that caters to the sports bar crowd rather than a nice date.

Camon has been the best and will remain the best as long as there are people that love authentic fresh sushi.    [24 May 2007 04:33:31]
