Kevin is one of the best chefs around. The food is delicious, and the mean is so tender you cut it with a fork. The atmosphere is wonderful, whether it's at lunch or dinner. [25 Mar 2003 14:17:01]

New Chef at Delamater's Recently dined at Delamater's in Newberry...food was extraordinary, learned new chef was from New York and had just arrived from his executive chef position in St. Croix, Virgin Islands. Innovative and tasty dishes with beautiful presentation. Returned with business colleagues who were equally impressed. A must for anyone who enjoys dining out and often. [30 May 2003 00:21:10]

Awesome Food at Delamater's This is an outstanding restaurant. I've visited there twice, and both times the food and the service were exceptional. It's both a casual, yet classy and elegant restaurant. It suits the needs of all diners. [01 Dec 2003 10:17:38]

Recently Visited Delamater's My wife and I are from the Knoxville, Tennessee area and decided to pass through Newberry on the way back from Myrtle Beach. The town was small but beautiful with several old homes, commercial buildings, etc. including an impressive number of restaurants downtown. I wanted to try them all, but as many weren't open for lunch on the Saturday we were there, we settled on Delamater's. In a word, it was wonderful. The atmosphere and decor are quite cozy, with just enough of a hint of an upscale establishment to make you feel as if you are dining rather than simply eating while remaining essentially casual. The space is a converted bank building, but the decor is so well done that this fact adds to the atmosphere rather than detracting from it (one of the old vaults - with the door standing open - is now being used for wine storage). I had a bowl of the she-crab soup (they bring a little sherry that you can add to your soup to taste and the crab tasted very fresh) and the crab cakes appetizer. Having just come from the beach, I had eaten a lot of really good seafood that week, including she-crab soup and crab cakes at other really good restaurants. However, I must say I felt these dishes at Delamater's ranked among the best I had eaten all week. My wife had a bowl of the she-crab soup (okay, my one complaint - I think a piece of crab which should have been discarded - quite likely a gill - made it into my wife's soup - told you the crab tasted very fresh!) and a Monte Cristo sandwich. I had never heard of this dish before. It has ham, cheese and turkey and is dipped in an egg batter and deep-fried. It is then served with a raspberry dipping sauce. At first, it sounded a little strange to me, but surprised me with how good it really was. The price was also very reasonable. The only disappointment I felt was that we didn't have a chance to stay in town longer and sample the dinner menu as we needed to continue our journey homeward. Well, that and the fact that this wonderful restaurant isn't closer to where we live! [05 Jan 2004 12:56:44]

An evening at the Opera House brought us into town from Knoxville, TN. This restaurant has us longing to return to this "Diamond in the Rough" Town. Great unique historic setting. All servers are well informed on food prep and wines. We will be back in November for another night at the Opera and dinner at Delamater's. [20 Sep 2004 08:15:20]

Good Food, Great Atmosphere Delamater's is a wonderful little restaurant. I would know, since I worked there for a good many months. The food, cooked by one of the nicest and most creative chefs I know, Brandon, is fantastic and, for the most part, very reasonably priced. And if something seems to be a little overpriced, there's probably a darn good reason: Brandon uses some of the best ingredients that he can in his dishes.
The atmosphere is wonderful as well. The restaurant used to be a bank and has beautiful woodwork and very nice wallpaper. It's a small piece of up-town class in a small-town environment. I don't know how many waitresses or waiters you know that would recommend their place of business, but I would recommend Delamater's as a quality place to eat if you're ever hungry and in Newberry. Best Filet Ever!!!!` The filet had an excellent taste, and it was very tender! In fact our plan was to save room for dessert, and we did not have any left. [21 May 2007 23:12:22]
