Pleasantly Surprised Visited this restaurant for the first time tonight. The first thing I noticed was how reasonably priced the food was. Actually, so reasonable, I was somewhat leery. I ordered one of their fried seafood platters which consisted of 6 shrimp, one crabcake and one piece of fish. It comes with french fries and salad for $7.99. I added a baked potato for an additional 1.99 and one fried soft shell crab for 3.99. I was impressed with the shrimp which were of nice size and lightly breaded (some kind of crunch breading). The crab cake was good, small though, actually I thought is was a hush puppy until I bit it. It would have been to my expectations except the description of the crab cake is a bit misleading. I thought I would be getting lump crabmeat (some special recipe of theirs) and while their were a few strands of lump crabmeat there was quite a bit of filler. The taste was good though. The piece of fish was good, didnt really care for the breading, a little bland, although Im sure some people would like it this way. The soft shell crab was excellent. The same breading as the shrimp. All in all the for the price it was more than I expected. I wouldn't recommend the additional 1.99 for the baked potato, even though I ordered it all-the-way, the toppings were scant. My order was a take-out, so I'm not sure if you eat-in if you have the option of topping the potato yourself. I will go back and try some of their grilled or boiled seafood. As I said, the prices are extremely reasonable, so you won't lose a lot. By the way, I ordered at the restaurant and it was ready in less then 10 minutes. Since their menu is extensive, I would be interested in hearing about others experience. [19 Jan 2006 21:16:27]

Awesome!!! From the Chesapeke Bay to the Gulf coast, Baytown Seafood in Beaumont, TX has some of the best priced meals a seafood lover could want. The JUMBO soft shell crabs were the biggest and tastiest I have ever eaten, and at 3.99 each a bargain. The fried shrimp were plentiful and also very tasty. My meal consisited of 18 large fried shrimp for 12.99 and an add-on soft shell. The gumbo is also highly recommended and chock full of goodness - easy access just off I-10. [01 Aug 2006 07:27:44]

Bland While the servers and prices are really great, the food is just bland, except for the gumbo.
The gumbo is the only food I would really highly recommend. There were six in our party. Four adults, 1 teenager and one child. The bill was only $87. That isn't bad, but you have to like your food tasteless. [27 Nov 2006 09:04:19]

Awesome!! from Anonymous? Just wanted to see if anyone else could plainly see through the 'disguised as a review' ad for baytown seafood. No one writes a review like this, lol. It reads so like a commercial it's insulting. Nevertheless, I guess I'll give it a try and report back. [19 Aug 2007 12:57:27]

Just about the best seafood I have had in a long time. Although I like seafood I do NOT like walking into a restaurant that smells really fishy. And they didn't. I ordered the breaded Jumbo (very large and not misleading) 15 piece shrimp, and my hubby ordered a seafood platter sampler of some sort. It had scallops, broiled shrimp, fish, etc. I did not find the food bland as I love cocktail sauce on breaded shrimp and melted/lemon butter on broiled. I found that I truly enjoyed the meal, service was great and timely. Would certainly eat there again. [15 Mar 2008 02:54:02]

Good, but some management problems. I liked the food every time I went. Good gumbo, and the grilled shrimp were excellent. Decent prices, too.
Unfortunately, there was a recent incident where a manager left and blew the whistle on some of their kitchen practices.

They did clean up their practice regarding the oyster containers, and I'm sure they are being watched like a hawk now on reusing ingredients, but it did give me pause and I'm boycotting them for another few months until I see more restaurant reports. [07 Jun 2008 20:08:05]
