It was all around goodtimes!! The guys in my group (3 of us) were instructed to "go to the kitchen"! At that point we began to serve the ladies (4 of them) that were with us! Brenda in the kitchen was a riot!! Pure joy to work/joke with. We actually "had" to help prepare the food! After throwing extra flour on ourselves to look pittfully over-worked, we sat down and enjoyed a wonderfully orchestrated meal! All around....goodtimes had by all! [19 Nov 2001 23:38:52]

Finally! Finally! I have found a Mexican Food Cafe in Texas that tastes like Mexican food should taste. (like New Mexico Mexican food.) Tex Mex is ok, but this is way better. The only improvement would be for Lola to use chile from the Hatch and Mesilla valleys in southern NM.
I go early, right after she opens in the morning to avoid the crowds.
I live 2 hours from Lola's and stop there every time I go to Abilene.

My favorite If you think Mexican food should taste like the flavor packet from Old El Paso taco seasoning, you might be disappointed with Lola's fare. But those who have had real home cooked Mexican food will love every bite!
The only meat on the small menu is ground beef. (There might be chicken enchiladas....I can't recall.) The ground beef has the texture like it has been cooked in a pressure cooker, and is extremely tender. It has no spices or chilis in it.
My favorite is her chili relleno...cooked up crispy. Others swear by the green enchiladas. She also has callavicitas....a mixture of chilis, beef, and squash topped with cheese.
Best of all is the Indian fry bread served fresh with each meal with honey on the side. Don't miss Lola's! [19 Jul 2009 23:45:04]
