Wonderful! We spent some time in Castroville this past winter and found it to be a charming town, but the Alsatian was a delight for sure. Everything we had was excellent. The atmosphere is cozy, the service was the best and the food -- again was worth the trip! [18 Mar 2001 14:30:34]

We eat here everytime we're in Castroville fairly regularly) cause it's simply the best. I love the way they prepare their special Castroville sausage and sauerkraut. My wife and I highly recommend you eat here. [15 Nov 2001 20:06:58]

Sweet Place We dined at the Alsatian for the first time last night. We were seated in the back of the cottage near the windows that face the backyard. A family was celebrating a birthday outside on the patio. They were obviously having a good time. It was nice to see. Anyhow, we started with an appetizer of sausage and cheese. It was garnished with red onion, tomato and black and green olives. Interesting. My husband had the filet mignon and grilled shrimp. I had the ribeye steak. Both steaks were tasty but not real tender. The shrimp were highly peppered but fresh tasting. The meals were accompanied by roasted new potatoes, sauteed squash and very good red cabbage. The wine prices are incredibly reasonable and we found the house burgandy was a good cheap choice. Our server was Angel and an angel he was. Excellent service. We'll definitely return and try the German food. [31 Mar 2002 16:10:25]

A Perfect Dinner Five of us went to the Alsatian Restaurant in Castroville and had a perfect meal. Since at least two of us were professional foodie, and another two of us had travelled the world, that is a serious compliment. I had the jagerschnitzel. It was crisp, perfectly flavored, and though decorated with a white wine sauce and a grape sauce, not mushroom gravy, was still the best pork I have ever eaten. The side vegetables-redcabbage, kraut, and sweet carrots made the perfect taste contrast. Each in itself was also a delight. We had a variety of dishes, but I think the jagerschnitzel was the best. For afters we shared bread pudding, a thing I disliked until that dinner, cherry cobbler and German chocolate cake, all splendid. Our server was delightful, attentive, funny, prompt and helpful. In all it was a perfect dinner. [14 Apr 2004 09:42:12]

We braved the cold and decided to see what the NY Times was onto when they called this place the best place for German food in Texas.
Our schnitzels, too uniform and identical to be anything but frozen, were deep fried to a greasy, chocolate brown, tasteless level. The roasted potatoes had apparently never seen olive oil, butter, or salt; instead of roasting the nice portion of carrots, which would have imparted some flavor, surely, they too appeared on our plate sans salt, butter, or taste. I must say the red cabbage and sauerkraut that my husband opted out of at least have some flavor, but they were likely from jars.
There were only two other diners, also in a cold room with wide gaps between wall and window A/C unit pouring in fresh air, and they left before us--not as hardy, I suppose. [25 Jan 2008 17:38:41]

My family and I have eaten at the Alsatian Restaurant at least four or five times in the last four years and have always enjoyed an excellent cuisine and equally superb service. [01 Jun 2008 21:42:28]

Exceptional food Dining at the Alsatian Restaurant was a wonderful experience. The view of the Medina Valley from the restaurant added to the whole pleasant experience. The food was exceptional and beautifully presented. The service and attention by the wait staff was flawless. The ballroom was an elegant place for a celebration. I cannot recommend it enough!
