Bar H - Bar None the Best Steaks in Dalhart
The Bar H was formerly a K-Bob's Steakhouse, but it is better now almost in every way than its "chain" predecessor. Good salad bar. Only thing I don't care for is it has no windows! Too dark inside.
Friendly, and reasonably fast service. Good varied menu.
The "Sands Restaurant" (not listed in Dalhart (both on E.US54)is another long-time family restaurant in Dalhart with good food.    [29 Apr 2003 12:30:40]

Our guess is Bar H stands for HORRIBLE! Our recent $100 dinner (6 of us were "dining") has to be right up there with the worst meal we've ever had. We opted for some appetizers which seemed fairly simple to do...fried cheese sticks and then a Tex (something) plate which consisted of several fried items (onion rings, stuffed japalenos, etc.) Let's just say the picture (cut straight from the frozen box) presents this food WAY too good! Our food arrived fried to the max and the cheese sticks came with ranch instead of the pictured marinara. After asking for some marinara it arrived about 15 minutes after our food and was FROZEN, the second attempt to have it heat brought it down to a cool refrigerated temperature. What we didn't know was this was only a "sampling" of what was yet to come. No real kids meals just "small" sizes but don't be fooled as the small chicken fried steak is straight from the freezer and far from the great food the waitress commented on. Kid's corn dog...best of the whole meal! Fries...let's just say they missed the frying part and arrived greasy and uncooked! Steak avoid it at all cost...you're just wasting your $18! Green beans, COLD...rice COLD again (sent this back to be reheated and only after we asked just to see what they'd say it returned heated but AFTER the meal was done). "Buttered" rolls? We'd describe them more like basted in OLD oil! Baked potatoe...think you can't go wrong well you can it was mealy but maybed just a bad batch so we'll say not their fault. Chicken fried steak (regular portion) better than the frozen small one but tasteless gravy accompanied it...thank goodness it was on the side! Free soft serve ice cream was the highlight of the meal only because we were hungry from leaving a good bit of the other. Salad bar...hope you don't mind inhaling some smoke from the smokers as it's place right in the middle of the smoking section!

Service...she tried; worked hard but just didn't get it. She did address the fact that she should have warned the adult who ordered the "small" portion of chicken fried steak it was from the freezer so she asked the Manager about removing it from the bill...no such luck even though only one bite had been taken. Good love that Customer Service!!

Sad thing is this place is packed so if this is the best in town we're happy that this was our first and last meal in Dalhart!

Plan your trip so that your drive takes you through town at some time other than meal time!

I guess if you don't mind a dark, dreary restaurant setting with bad food this place is for you!    [11 Mar 2006 20:36:32]

If you are stopping in to eat in Dalhart, I suggest driving past Bar H. My husband I stopped in and got the buffet. It was greasy and pitiful. It comes with soup and salad bar but the price was still a little high for just lunch.    [26 Apr 2009 23:36:05]

Good Steakhouse
I go through Dalhart once a year and always have dinner at the Bar H. Last year (2008) they had just changed ownership and had not received their liquour license. The service and steaks were as good as the previous ownership. They retained the man that cooks the steaks.
We've never tried anything but the steaks. I've always been disappointed when I don't order steaks in a steakhouse. Or fish is a fish house. Or steaks in a Mexican restaurant, etc.

The steaks have always been cooked exactly as asked for. Since the grill is adjacent to the dining area we always stop and thank the cook. He never touches or times them. He can tell by instict and the feel on the tongs. I need to apprentice there.
I'm very sensitive to smoke since I quit about 30 years ago and didn't notice any problem with the salad bar. Which. by the way, is more that adequate.
The soft ice cream is an nice touch to end the evening.
We've always been there in the evening an never noticed the lack of windows.
