A Dalhart Landmark for Years Not fancy by any means...but you don't expect that in Dalhart, Texas do you? I've eaten at the Sands since the mid-60's when traveling through on U.S.54, and I have never been disappointed yet with the food. Decent, if small, salad bar. It's a "homey" type place, with lots of locals, but newcomers are treated well too. [10 Feb 2004 13:58:14]

Good Choice for a travler We stopped there driving south to AZ. Both of us had something from the breakfast menu, which is active all day (we were there in the evening.) I had the pork chops and eggs, my wife had ham and eggs. Both were delicious. We complimented them on the ham and were told they often heard that. It's a local ham. I also told them the pork chops were good and was told the chef cuts both the pork and the beef himself.
The scrambled eggs were good enough, mostly unseasoned. That meant I could add my own seasonings, which I did.
I asked for and got some of their home-made jalapeƱo jelly for my biscuit just so I could try it. I've never it that before but theirs seemed quite good to me.
It is Texas and smoking is allowed. we seated ourselves as far as we could from the smoking section, which helped. After ordering I noticed that there was a "lighter" section on the menu. Still, I was happy with what I ate and it fortified us for a couple more hours of driving. [01 May 2007 13:18:21]
