Subway?? No way! Blue Quail, Please! Eating at this quiant little deli on the square in Goliad has become a favorite of mine. As a high school senior with off campus lunch priviledges, I take advantage of my opportunity every afternoon to skip the same old greasy food with old vegetables from Whataburger and Dairy Queen, and head to the one place I can always count on to deliver something healthy and delicious. Upon arriving, customers are able to immediately give their order to the cashier face-to-face (which insures that the order is correct, and allows a personal and friendly touch) and then proceed to watch the employees create their sandwiches or enjoy the paintings that decorate the establishment. Drinks are do-it-yourself and tea with all the fixings (fresh lemons, sugar, etc) and a Coca Cola ice box with every drink known to man is easily accessible. Besides the dining experience and the amazing taste of the food (all food is baked, cooked, served, etc. fresh every single morning), one of the unique experiences that you only find in small towns is the socializing. Blue Quail has such a relaxed atmosphere that wondering around the deli to talk to locals and even the owner and managers themselves is something I greatly appreciate. Too many businesses have become entirely impersonal, so getting to speak with people and learn stories behind the names, painting, and cute statues (best one is a pig in a chef's hat) is a great way to enhance the experience. In addition to the main dining area, there are two large rooms that are perfect for accomodating get-togethers and conducting meetings. As for the food, a favorite of mine that also meets the expenses of a high schooler perfectly are the wraps. Each wrap was created and named after an employee so they each have their own distinct taste. Soups are delicious too and a favorite, of course, is their prize winning jalepeno soup. Its absolutely creamy and the jalepeno is not too overpowering and just right. The do-it-yourself sandwiches are also great for customers wanting to have all sorts of things and wonderful for kids to make. Homemade, fresh cookies (the macadamia nut is to die for) and cobbler of all kinds are available at a great price. For me, I've always had to leave with a to go box because I'm so full by the time I have to get back to the school, so portions here are perfect even for those with stomachs that are hard to ever fill. Overall, the Blue Quail Deli is my first choice when deciding where to eat in Goliad because of the comfortable atmoshere, friendly and accomodating employees, and the quaility and quantity of each dish at hardly any cost to your wallet. So, for other diners who choose to experience a taste far greater than any deli or Subway can offer, with fun provided while your there, the Blue Quail is perfect. [14 Dec 2006 23:40:38]
