Boy, does this place suck Very bad Tex-Mex food. This really isn't acceptable in Texas, when there are excellent Tex-Mex places all around. I had some queso and was practically insulted by the fake-cheese-in-a-can stuff they gave me. It was pretty much the same grade as ballpark nachos, and for $2.50, priced about the same. It might be the only place in town, but if the food is cheap and bad, why not drive a few extra minutes to Arranda's or something? [29 Nov 2001 18:28:18]

Joshua Robertson
Best Mexican Restaurant in Galveston I don't know who this Joshua Robertson person is but he surely doesn't know what Mexican food tastes like. First of all Cheese Dip is not Mexican food and it is not the only food this restaurant serves and yes this is the only Mexican restaurant in town but the best in Galveston and even Houston, because it has been owned and operated for over 30 years by a Mr & Mrs Ramiro & Marty Gonzales and the only thing they cook is atthentic mMxican food not cheese dip. This place makes the best beans, rice, enchiladas, tacos, fajitas, guacamole etc that I and many customers have ever tasted. Thats why this place has been there for over 30 years and NO they do not sell liguor so they make their money solely by food and non-alcoholic beverages. [04 Oct 2002 14:14:59]

Anonymous, Houston
In Defense of El Sombrero My parents have been eating there every Friday night as a ritual for over 20 yrs. I speak in agreement with "Anonymous Houston's"comments. [02 Dec 2002 10:38:31]

Best Place Within 100 Miles I too don't know what to make of J. Robertson's comments of Nov., 2001. El Sombrero has got to be the best Mexican food restaurant within a 100 mile radius at least! There are/were some close contenders: The Original Mexican Cafe on 14th st. in Galveston has dishes that are as good as some El Sombrero offers but at a higher price....The unfortunately closed Leo's on S. Shepherd in Houston (Remember the inside cover of ZZ Top's, "Tres Hombres" album with the wonderful spread of Mexican food on a table?...that photo was taken at Leo's.) was, again, as good but not any better than El Sombrero. Some diners who are expecting a sort of institutional, "franchise", sort of play on Mexican food may find such places as El Sombrero to be not quite their cup of tea but, for those who roam the backroads in search of the Real McCoy,.....El Sombrero is it! Awesome We have been going to El Sombrero for as long as I can remember-over 20 years of the 30 they have been open. We now travel over 40 miles every Friday night as a tradition to get a taste of their wonderful home cooked mexican food. The hot sauce is the best ever, the rice, tacos, fajitas and enchiladas are also the best that I've tasted. It is very reasonable and by far out does any other Mexican restaurant that I've been to, and I've been to most in the area. [27 Apr 2004 16:41:17]

While I won't go so far as to say that El Sombrero is "the best Mexican food for 100 miles"; I will admit that it is a decent restaurant. So, fans of El Sombrero, take heart, many people find this restaurant a nice little jewel in the heart of Galveston County. [16 Mar 2005 11:16:50]

I am an austrian citizen, married to a texan, who grew up in hitchcock. I have to say that the tex-mex food at El Sombrero is always a highlight of my vacations in galveston. [15 Jul 2005 06:04:09]
