Tithing at its best It's not a fine dining experience, but the Mt. Zion folks sure do know how to barbeque. There are four meats on the menu, brisket, ribs, sausage and chicken. Each dinner comes with potato salad, beans, some white bread, and a pickle spear. You can order 1-3 meat plates or all you can eat. The meat is tender, well seasoned and the sauce is flavorful without being prohibitively spicy.
If you want chicken on your all-you-can eat plate, you have to request it. [13 Apr 2005 13:07:01]

Awesome BBQ I have heard about, New Zion Missionary Baptist Church Barbeque many times but never made the trip even though I live in Willis, TX just down the road. Then I saw a BBQ show on channel 8 and they had a spot on New Zion BBQ which was great, so I after the show, I drove to New Zion and had the a Ribs, and Brisket plate. Great BBQ, sauce is very good, service is great. Make the trip, attend church, and then try some great Heaven sent BBQ... [21 Sep 2006 09:20:53]

CLOSED! A friend and I made the drive from Austin to this shrine of bbq on Wednesday (04-25-07) and found it closed. The pits were cold and a yellowed notice on the window anounced a funeral service for someone who must have been a mover and shaker of the place. A forlorn sense of abandonment hovered over the premises. Looks like the best bbq in Texas might be a thing of the past in Huntsville. Give them a call before making a special trip. Hopefully the smoke will rise into Heaven again soon. [29 Apr 2007 00:13:43]

Pretty good bbq Ive had all the greats, Joe Allens, Coopers, Salt Lick, Blacks and all the others in Lockhart, and City Market. Church of the Holy Smoke is right up there with all of those. Everything was great, ribs could have been cooked a bit longer but were still excellent, chicken was the best I have ever had. [25 Jul 2007 18:45:37]

Great Food Wonderful People (see note on times) We ate at New Zion last week (3/21/08) and the food is as good as everyone said it was. Ribs were meaty and the flavor had good depth. The chicken was moist while well cooked. The Brisket was tender and cooked through. The sauce, which was poured on but could have been on the side, was to rave about. I'll make the trek when ever I'm in the area.
Ambiance - I rated it perfect. My 89 year old mother wouldn't. It was everything you could ask for in a classic East Texas barbeque cafe.
A note on the time.
Wednesday - 11:00-3:00 (We got there at 4:30 and the smoker was still warm, but the door was locked)

I just ate at New Zion Baptist Church. I had the ribs which were very good. They could have been cooked a little bit more. They were just on the edge of excellent. They are not quite as good as Pizzitoli's in Houston. [18 Apr 2008 18:25:30]
