Feed Mill Cafe - Johnson City, TX T’is the season in Texas, wildflower season. If you’re a true blood or a new blood Texan, heading to the Hill Country between April and mid July is a Texan’s right of passage. Nearing the heart of the Hill Country, you most likely pass through Johnson City. Named for the family of the 36th President of the United Sates who was born in the city and raised along the Pedernales River. He rests on the LBJ Ranch which is now a National Historical Park. Johnson City is at the junction of State Highway 281 and 290 and is on the doorstep to the heart of Bluebonnet country in the spring time. Johnson City offers visitors many reasons other than wildflowers to stop and visit. Antique shops and curios line both sides of the road. You can drop by and see LBJ’s boyhood home or you can stop in for some good grub at the Feed Mill restaurant. The Feed Mill is the most prominent and unique building about a half-mile west of the 281- 290 junction. It was, well, a feed mill and it still looks like it. Don’ t let the looks fool you. The uniqueness of the building isn’t all on the outside. Step through the double swing doors and you quickly realize that you’re in for a treat. The place is clean but very rustic. The menu offers choices geared to those who enjoy home cooking picnic style. Grilled hamburgers, cheese burgers, chicken fried steak, onion rings, French fries call to the arteries like white glue to Big Chief paper. [04 Feb 2003 12:41:35]
