Just one of those nights? After two successful take-out meals -- of acceptable Chinese-American fare -- we tried dining in on a Saturday evening, ordering a Pu-Pu Platter followed by Mencius Beef. The former was a disappoinment: dry, overdone beef and ribs, lackluster Crab Rangoons and Egg Rolls, and two oil-sodden fried items (Shrip Toast and Fried Wonton). The latter, Mencius Beef (a much-touted house special) was interesting, but nothing out of the ordinary.
When we complained about the Platter, our server noted that previous guests had also complained, and that the kitchen had been advised accordingly. But no adjustment was offered, since we'd eaten most of the items served, grumbling all the way.
For those who've never dined on Chinese-American food in San Francisco or New York, this place may be OK. But those who've enjoyed real "gourmet" Chinese food may be disappointed.
We'll give this place another try and report back. It was voted "Kerrville's Best" in recent years. Could have been just one of those nights.... [14 Jul 2002 12:10:31]
