Great Tastes In A Small Town My wife and I were in Marathon twice last week and visited Shirley's both times. Don't miss this place for friendly, down home service and great baked goods. [05 Nov 2002 12:07:43]

Great Polverones The fried pies are probably terrific, but I didn't try them. I can tell you, though that the "polverones" (known elsewhere by names ranging from "Russian Tea Cakes" to "Mexican Wedding Cookies") are terrific. We bought a dozen on our way home from a trip to Big Bend, they were gone by the time we got to the Midland airport. We also had fun talking with Shirley. [12 Dec 2002 18:34:12]

Don't Miss It! Marathon has billed itself as the "Gateway to Big Bend," but Shirley's bakery is almost worth the trip by itself. Breads, rolls, and biscuits are all superb. The doughnuts are the best anywhere. It's probably just me, but the only item that disappointed was the house specialty, the fried pies. That's the only quibble. Everything else---especially Shirley's warm and friendly service---is terrific. [15 Jun 2003 01:13:43]

Popped in on our way Popped into the Burnt Biscuit on our way from near Toronto Canada to Big Bend & had ourselves a couple of great doughnuts the day before Christmas 2003. Sat outside at the picnic table & wolfed em down. Grrrrrreaat!! [06 Jan 2004 21:44:46]

FRIED PIES:) Shirley is a great girl:) We ladies had a fabulous chat with her and the fried pies were heavenly-glorious-chuck full of dripping fruit-we ate over the bag to catch the excess and delighted in every bite! If Shirley is stil baking in Marathon DON'T miss her place:) [03 Mar 2004 12:49:21]
