Tried and Fried, Can't be Beat!
Charcoal House has become an institution in San Angelo and features basically the same menu it did over 30 years ago in its original location. Why? Because it is GOOD! Originally featuring charcoal-flavored hamburgers (it seems the charcoal flavoring has diminished over the years for some reason) steak, chicken and fish fingers, fries and onion rings make up their menu with very few, but tasty new additions such as deep fried cheese-stuffed jalapeno peppers. All the sandwiches are served in the old red, white or blue plastic baskets on tissue with a slab of onion, a sweet cherry pepper and barbecue sauce that strangely foreshadowed Outback Steakhouse's version by a few dozen years. It's simple, with drive-up windows and somebody else's newspaper. The ambience changes with the crowd, cause the food stays the same: great.    [26 Feb 2004 20:54:01]
