Excellent Chinese Buffet Cafe East is one of a few restaurants I wouldn't want to have to do without. While they have gradually raised prices over the past year (lunch is now $6.25, dinner about $7.75), it remains a good value.
The service is consistently good and it appears to be one of the cleanest Chinese restaurants I've visited. Cafe East has been voted the best buffet restaurant for the past two years in the local newspaper poll.
As with any Chinese buffet, not every dish is for everyone, and you'll need to sample a number of items to find what's right for you. Some dishes are too ethnic for most Americans, but Cafe East consistently draws a widely diverse clientele well representative of the very ethnically diverse Fort Bend community, so a lot of folks are finding something to their liking there. Overall, I would say that Cafe East is more oriented toward Americans than China Bear, its main competitor.
My favorite dishes are the spicy chicken, broccoli (much fresher than in American restaurants), and chicken fried rice.
My main complaints, relatively minor, are two: First, the salad bar isn't as fresh as I would like (which seems to be a problem common to all buffets, Chinese or American). Second, they switch out shrimp fried rice for the chicken fried rice in the dinner menu, rather than giving you a choice of both. [02 Oct 2004 23:58:06]
