Yummy food in Thurber, Tx We loved the setting-all the old photos & antiques. We stopped and ate here after visiting the Museum-which is very good. My daughter had the salad, chicken fried steak, fries, and homemade roll, my husband & I had the hamburgers & fries. The iced tea was refreshing. The food very good. Thick juicy burgers (mine was a little too pink in the center)on perfectly toasted buns. Just the right crispness in all the fries. Tracy said the chicken fry was very good-coulda been a bit bigger but it was the lunch size. The salad fresh & crisp with lots of ranch dressing. Note-accepted our check. [21 Aug 2003 22:07:47]

Best Texan cook'n in Texas There are many restaurants in Texas, few of which maintain the lengendary taste and quality of the rich Texas heritage. Over the years Texas has formulated a signature taste in which is described in every bite at the Smokestack Restaurant. Family founded and operated, the Smokestack surpasses all quality in genuine cooking, you will find at any price. [09 Dec 2003 10:28:33]

Home cooking done right You get a family feel as soon as you walk in, and the food backs up the whole experience. Makes stopping in Thurber worth your time. We got a sense of the history with all the great photographs and antique pieces. Food hit the spot and service was great. You should definitely make a stop by next time your in the area. Friday catfish We stopped for dinner and the catfish plate was more than I could eat. Other's in our party had the CFS and declared it to be the best. Not deep fried, but done in the iron skillet like it used to be cooked. The food was so good, we stopped on our way back to Fort Worth to eat the CFS. Worth the drive from Fort Worth or anywhere else. [15 Mar 2007 19:37:54]

Not the I don't think a couple of the other posters actually get out and sample the cuisine around the state, but for what it is, The Smokestack is a decent place to stop along I-20.
It isn't in the realm of "Best in the State", but the CFS is pretty good. For road food, it's quite a nice spot to stop and unwind for a while. Other than that, I just don't see why a few of the other comments are as over the top as they are... [01 Jul 2007 14:43:13]
