Ugly Shadow Our trip to Moab was wonderful in almost every way. An ugly incident cast a shadow on our vacation. The town is small, quiet and friendly for the most part. Sunset Grill promised beautiful vistas from its lofty perch and it delivered. We sat on the patio and surprisingly the chairs were white plastic lawn chairs that seemed disturbingly tacky and out of place in the scenic surroundings. The food was good even though it seemed only one waiter was on duty and the restaurant was quite busy. After he took our drink order, he asked us where we were from and we answered him- none of us are American. He quickly walked off without another word and we were left wondering at his half-hearted attempt at small talk. After the meal, our waiter brought our bill, which already a 17% gratuity. We were puzzled as this is the practice of most restaurants with parties of 15 diners or more; we were only 3 diners at our table. When we asked the waiter for an explanation he informed us that they normally added the charge for ALL foreigner guests! About 90% of their diners seemed mostly European while others were Asian. My sister and I are African and our friend is Asian. We believe in tipping for good service but for some reason Sunset Grill seemed in doubt of our ability to do so. We believe that he was lying. There are thousands of foreigners working in this country, who speak accent less American English. [14 Aug 2007 19:49:43]
