Authentic
After spending time in Germany we were looking for a place with the same taste as we were used to and this place has it.

They have schnitzle and spatzle and delicious gravy, as well as apple strudle.

The best German food outside of Germany
This is the best german restaurant that I have been to since I left Germany 4 years ago. It is great homecooked food, the service is great all the staff is friendly. and after having been there a couple times it feels like being part of the family. The satff and the owner will check on how things are ect. Great place to go. Oh and the portions. Under no circumstance miss out on dessert. Bake on site mhhhh so good.    [24 Sep 2003 16:05:24]

Gone there for years
Das Walcafe has been a main staple in our dining out experiences for decades. My husband (transplant) and I (Newport News native)have dearly loved this little gem our entire married life of 26 years. We crave the food and can count on it's excellent quality for dining in and carrry out. The owners are a lovely family, who have helped us raise our children by letting them wind the cookoo clock when they were young and restless or providing crayons and coloring books. They even lend the children authentic German magazines for Geography projects! In our early travels, we would go to expensive German restaurants looking for another Das Waldcafe experience. Boy, were we wrong! It can't be found. Their food is one of a kind. We enjoy everything on the menu but go into withdrawals if we are too long without the bratwurst, rotkraut, spaetzle and a garten salad. We are thankful for this terrific restaurant and our friends who serve us ther    [19 May 2004 20:33:03]

Authentic German dining experience, minus the smoke
Having lived in and around Germany for several years, I was initially leery of a German restaurant in little ol' Newport News.

My fears turned out to be completely unfounded.
The menu is small, and focused. I've tried a number of items, and have never encountered food that was less than exceptional. In this day of the Atkins and South Beach craze, it's refreshing to find a restaurant that has stuck to its guns. I know that a meal at Das Waldcafe will be good, each and every time.

The dining room is very plain, almost starkly white, with decorative nods to the Motherland dotting the walls. The cloth-covered tables are always bearing little vases filled with fresh seasonal flowers, plucked from the owner's own garden.    [17 Mar 2005 12:02:45]

know the owners personally
A member of my church, Traudel does an amazing job running this traditional German restaurant. All of the desserts are home-made by her personally and many of the waitresses "sprechen Deutsch."    [02 Oct 2006 23:37:23]
