The Surrey House has new owners - yeah! Well, I just visited the Surrey House which reopened under new ownership in August of '06.
I can't tell you how pleased I was to see that the new owners have returned this treasure to its original high quality food and service.
The menu reopened with has many of the original dishes the restaurant opened with in 1954. Everything our family ordered was delicious. Crabcakes, Fried Chicken and my husband had the special of the day, which was Country Fried Steak and it was wonderful, we ordered one to take with us.
The prices are very reasonable. The desserts delicious and the homemade rolls were wonderful. We bought some of those to take with us as well. Great country home cooking that is so difficult to find this day and time! [27 Jan 2007 11:04:20]

Such an enjoyable dining experience Here to celebrate the 400th Anniversary of the founding of our country, we have been busy touring Jamestown Island for several days.
We were wondering where the ferry boats were going and what was on the other side from our view at the three ships. We decided to take a ride and venture to the other side of the James. We were so pleasantly surprised to find a beautiful countryside and ventured into the town of Surry.
Just past the blinking light in the delightful little town was the Surrey House Restaurant. What a good time and great meal we had.
Never having heard of peanut soup before we decided to give it a try. It was a rich wonderful soup with pieces of chopped peanuts throughout and a wonderful creamy texture. They also serve apple fritters which we had also never experienced before. Whether they come with the meal or as a dessert (I recommend the dessert). Apples in a crisp better covered with powdered sugar and a scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream. It was delicious!
The prices are reasonable and the staff full of that warm southern hospitality you hear so much about. I highly recommend it! The ferry ride back was relaxing with a full stomach and a beautiful sunset on the James. An experience our children and I won't soon forget! [10 May 2007 10:22:09]

Thanks for the information I read about the Surrey House at this site and while visiting Williamsburg and Jamestown we decided to see what Surry was all about.
It's a small little town. Has a garden shop, Smith's Fort Plantation, Bacon's Castle, Chippokes Plantation and after seeing everything we relaxed and had a great meal at The Surrey House. Just as everyone said. Hospitality was great. Our waitress was full of personality and she as well as the owners made sure we had everything we needed. How often do you have an owner introduce themselves and fill your drink!
The food was great the prices more reasonable than I've seen in years at a restaurant. I recommend the Fried Flounder dinner. It was delicious. Homemade hushpuppies came with it. My wife got the fried chicken, which isn't prepared until you order it. They tell you it takes 20 minutes, and worth the wait. My wife got the apple fritter dessert and I had the coconut custard pie. No complaints here.
We'll go back the next time we're in Williamsburg. The ferry ride was great. [23 May 2007 22:00:39]

Great Family Dining! My family was visiting Jamestown. Actually we asked one of the guides while we were visiting Jamestown Island where the ferry boats were traveling to and what was on the other side. His reply was Surry, and while you're there, be sure to eat at the Surrey House.
Hey, it was great. Family owned and they are all there. Working and waiting tables and visiting with customers, genuinely interested where we were from and how we found The Surrey House.
When we ordered from the menu we decided to try the famous Peanut Soup. Our waitress very nicely asked us if we'd had it before. We had not. So she bought us a little sample before taking our order to make sure it was something we liked. It was and we ordered it anyway, but I can say I've never had that option offered to me before.
The peanut soup is delicious as are the apple fritters. The kids loved the Surrey Dogs and the special of the day was Fried Flounder. It was great. Good home cooking and reasonable prices. We'll be back Surrey House. [05 Jun 2007 22:36:29]

thanks for the information - we loved it Thank you to Chefmoz for leading us to the Surrey House! It's a great family restaurant. Prices are unbelievably low for the generous portions that all of us received. We all took home boxes. And I've got to say that they have the best fried chicken I've ever tasted! While you're there be sure to try their famous peanut raisen pie - not to be missed! If your in the Williamsburg area - it's worth the trip!

What a great meal Great food, great people. That's all I can say about the Surrey House.
Our family enjoyed ourselves in this great little restaurant. We went for breakfast and the portions were more than generous and delicious. We toured the history that Surry had to offer and finished our travels up again at the restaurant for dinner. All I can say is two visits, breakfast and dinner, the prices are amazingly low (would have paid that for one meal in Williamsburg) and we left with full stomachs, leafovers for later and a great ferry ride back!
Thanks ChefMoz - great info! If you're in the Williamsburg area - take the trip across the river. Definitely worth it [03 Sep 2007 11:10:42]

Don't Miss Out Truely one of the best dining experiences that I have had in a long time, and even better that it happened to be a 54 year old landmark. I was driving through this quaint town as a suggested bypass from a friend and was told to check this place out. From what I've been told a family had cleaned the place up and re-opened it. My family and I enjoyed the visit thoroughly. The food was amazing, I haven't seen such generous portions like that anywhere, and I mean anywhere. I got the Fried Chicken which was so good I could have filled up on the skin alone and still have been satisfied. It came with mashed potatos and green beans. Even though I was getting full I couldn't stop eating. My wife got the Club Sandwich with fries which could have fed a small family it was so big. The French Fries were hot and crispy. My two kids got the Three Ham Biscuts, which I was told were a specialty there because the biscuts were homemade and the ham was local. The other entree, a Crabcake Sandwich, and might I say, PERFECTION. Crabcakes don't come with that much meat anymore and I'm glad to see a place who sticks to tradition. Aside from the food being amazing, the atmosphere was comfortable, relaxing, and very inviting. The server we had was genuine and on top of everything, including the five other tables she had. That didn't seem to put a damper on the service at all, she was that good. When the check came I was expecting to spend twice the amount it turned out to be. Another impressing quality, low prices, you just can't beat that. Long story short, I highly recommend The Surrey House Restaurant. I'm going to write my friend a thank you note for his suggestion to eat there. [06 Nov 2007 11:25:20]
