The Amphora is celebrating its 25th year. Just think that means 219,000 hours of service. They must be doing something right.

The food is incredible!!!!
Every (time) I go, the menus are terrific. The waiters and waitresses are nice and they know how to serve the costumers with gentle kindness. The managers are funny and nice people. My family are happy to come the Amphora Restaurant.    [23 Apr 2002 08:57:12]

College hang out
I'm always here with my friends. The food is the best you can get at 3am. More choices and way better than the normal Denny's. The deserts are GREAT. There is something for everyone, even picky eaters!    [10 Jul 2002 02:30:25]

Great service and food at a great price!
The food is always fresh and wonderful. The service is impecable at a price that can't be beat! The menu offers a wide selection for any palate from elegant(filet mignon and lobster tails) to casual (gyros and sandwiches). This is truly a wonderful and unique restaurant.    [13 Feb 2003 09:41:23]

Mediocrity incarnate
You know that old joke? "The food was terrible." "yeah, and the portions are so small." Here it rings true. While I wouldn't label the food "terrible", it is at best middling. And the portions have left me hungry.

If the quality and quantity were increased, the prices might seem reasonable. As things stand, the prices are inflated and aggravating. The service doesn't help to soften the blow, either. Neither frequent nor attentive, the waitstaff have play a sustained flat note. One gets the feeling that Amphora grows complacent and smug in its position as Vienna's sole 24-hour eatery.

Admittedly, I've never ordered dessert here. The entre and side dishes, however, leave much to be desired. Rather than proceed to a final sweet, I always decide to cut my losses and leave. One night's request for a side of vegetables produced a surprisingly tired combination of cauliflower and broccoli. The kitchen had boiled all spirit and texture out of the vegetables, leaving a pathetic, unseasoned melange that failed to delight a single sense.

Having said all of that, I must note that Amphora has several positive attributes. Of course, it is open all the time. And I have yet to see the place dead. There's always activity. Some may find it too noisy, but many will enjoy the bustle. The smoke-free section is graciously breathable, despite the constant presence of smokers in their section. Amphora's standard of cleanliness is high for any restaurant, and especially so for a restaurant this busy and filled with a significant share of drunk and high customers.

Would I return to Amphora? Yes, I would. I would return because, as the area's default late-night venue, it is often the site of friendly get-togethers. Friendship trumps a lousy dining experience any night of the week.

Gee, I wish that Anita's were still open    [26 Mar 2003 00:16:01]

It's a neighborhood diner - no more, no less
The Amphora is the closest thing to a New York style neighborhood Greek-American restaurant for the greater Vienna, VA area. I've eaten there for over 10 years. It is predictable. Don't order anything fancy, and you won't be disappointed. The food is decent. For breakfast, try Belgian Waffles with Strawberries; for lunch, an Amphora Deluxe (hamburger); for supper, try fish, lamb, or roast beef specials. For soups, try chicken noodle; avoid onion or creamed soups. Large Greek salad is excellent light meal. The prices are about 20% too high. If the waiter, food or service fails to meet your standard, ask to see the manager and say what will make you satisfied -- such as substitution or (partial) credit on check. You may be able to get a better deal at another dinner such as Lee Highway Diner in Arlington, but don't confuse the custom service with some national franchise so-called    [25 May 2003 20:19:33]

Vienna YES Herndon NO
The quality of food served at the Vienna location is superb. The Greek family that owns the Amphora in Vienna knows how to cook. However, I recommend avoiding Amphora's Diner Deluxe in Herndon where the food is marginal at best.    [13 Sep 2003 15:29:48]

It's a diner, don't expect much
This is a diner. Don't expect much out of it. The food is Ok, nothing great. Doens't taste fresh, you can tell they must buy everything frozen. The service is bad, inattentive. Management seems uncaring. Not very clean either. It's just a big diner.    [05 Jan 2004 14:26:25]

I have been to the Amphora a good many times, and frankly I don't see what's so special about it. The food is okay, but not so fresh, and the service is okay..but I prefer a smiling waitress who doesn't act like she hates her job. I will probably return there, because I have friends who like to go there, because it's open all the time. But to tell you the truth, I never recall seeing drunk and high people there..maybe I was there a diffrent night of the week.    [20 Feb 2004 18:47:55]

inconsistant
sometimes the food is fabulous, other times horrible. the service is strange-- sometimes they are completely on top of things, other times i have eaten here and people recieve food at random (one entree comes out, the next doesn't appear for 15 minutes, etc)
all the desserts are fabulous!    [28 Nov 2005 18:11:30]
