WOW! Deliciously seasoned and carefully prepared food, served by conscientious staff in a pleasant atmosphere, and at very reasonable prices.
The corn tamales appetizer is superb. Tender, with the slightest sweetness, with a perfect thin crispness on the outside. Drizzled with a creamy sauce and served with a bit of ensalada that makes a perfect contrast.
I had thought I'd like the Ensalada de Pollo a la Plancha, but have so often been disappointed by sad salad greens that I didn't want to risk it. I ordered the charbroiled chicken enchilada on my friend's recommendation. However, the waitress heard me wrong, apparently thinking I said "ensalada." Turns out that was a good thing! The Ensalada de Pollo was a very pleasant surprise. The mixed greens were tender, fresh and beautiful, and smothered with marinated, grilled chicken strips, plus avocado, tomato, Salvadoran cheese, fried plantains and house vinagrette.
My companion felt bold in trying pasta at a Central American restaurant, but was far from disappointed. The Linguini con Pollo y Chorizo was delightful. Well seasoned reggiano cream sauce with chorizo and perfectly grilled chicken.
El Portal serves the best Salvadoran and Mexican food I have tasted. The only improvement I would make to this place is in the salsa served at the beginning of the meal, which was disappointingly bland.    [16 Jun 2005 05:30:11]
