Some Like It Hot My first restaurant experience was Five Spice when I first moved to Burlington. I fell in love with it the second I walked in. It's just so cozy: the tables close together, lights around the bar, jazz softly playing in the background...
Service was fantastic; the staff really knows about food, spices and wine. 1/3 of the menu is deliciously vegetarian, but it's all made to order-so you can get almost everything the way you want it. The tom yum soup is to die for. Even all of the dipping sauces are made on site. Prices are reasonable, portions are perfect. It's relaxed and right in the center of downtown. Just promise me you'll go! Tell Ginger and Jerry I say hello! [16 May 2001 15:12:55]

Poor Service - Not Worth the Trip My party was rudely greeted on the stairs leading to the dining room. We sat for over 20 minutes before anyone would wait on us. As a result, I had to ask (beg) for someone to wait on us to at least order a cocktail. The waiter did not offer any information regarding the menu, food etc and was not helpful at all. When I confronted the waiter about the lack of service, I was appalled at the pretentious attitude and lack of respect he offered to myself and my family. The waiter simply did not or want to provide good service and felt the need to always have an excuse, ignoring my wishes. What ever happened to the "Customer is always right?" Obviously, this establishment has at least 1 inadequate poor waiter on staff that needs desperately to take a class on customer service and what happens when you don't provide it. Suggested by friends, we visited Five Spice and had a terrific time. Great food, casual atmosphere, attentive and knowledgeable staff. I don't like hot food, so I chose milder dishes, but my friends were blown away by many dishes. I loved the Indonesian mock duck - though I'm not a vegetarian. I ate a wing - and it was hot, but I liked it. Desserts - fabulous. Can't wait to go back! [20 Mar 2003 23:28:54]

Stopped in for the first time in a while and was sorry to see that Matt was no longer there. Still had our favorite meal, though. The margaritas were excellent as well. [10 Jan 2004 23:22:22]

Fond Memory I found out about Five Spice from a Welcome Center pamphlet, and on my way back from Canada, I had to stop in. The place is really cozy, very chic. The service was great, lotta smiley people. I ordered a dish called Evil Jungle Prince...and to this day, it's still one of my best culinary experiences. I'll drive all the way up there from PA to do it again. [06 Feb 2004 17:07:08]

Waaay Yummy We make frequent weekend trips to Burlington, and finally got to eat at Five Spice last weekend. We will definitely go out of our way to eat there every time we're in Burlington! Since my husband and I are both vegetarians, we were thrilled to see a wide variety of veg-friendly choices on the menu. We had the vegetarian steamed dumplings (I forget what they were called), Evil Jungle Princess, mock duck, and ginger-tangerine cheesecake. Everything was unbelievably delicious; the service was great, and it was a nice way to end a day of shopping and hanging out. [25 Sep 2006 18:21:42]
