Wow
This was one of the best meals I have ever had. I was delightfully surprised by the 'french fries' brought with mashed potatoes in the middle of the entree. Great portion size (meaning a lot, which is perfect because the food was so good). Elegant, romantic atmosphere and the price is right. Way less expensive than it could be charging for the quality. They were even playing the Buena Vista Social Club music in the background, my favorite.    [08 Nov 2003 14:23:41]

Impressive
All entrees are $16 and all appetizers are $5, making for easy billing. A very small quaint restaurant, very down-to-earth but not too over-the-top fancy as well. Portions were perfect - not too much to waste but not too little either. The capered salmon cakes and roasted duck egg roll were amazingly interesting appetizers. The medium-rare steak entree was slightly underdone, so order a little over what you are used to. Rack of lamb was perfectly cooked, and if you still have an appetite, order the pumpkin cheesecake. There is no breezeway so if you go in the winter it tends to be a bit chilly inside the restaurant.    [19 Dec 2004 21:48:21]

Outstanding Bistro Cuisine
Low-key atmosphere (as opposed to an over-the-top spot down the street). Friendly staff are knowledgeable about food and wine pairings. And, of course, the food. Salmon cakes were fresh, and sauteed just to an outside crispness. Interesting and nicely-presented salads. Grilled coffee-rubbed lamb was out of this world! They serve both garlic mashed potatoes and a cone of frites at the table--a bit of overkill, even if they were delicious. Deserts were competent, but not outstanding. A varied wine selection, grouped by price, made it easy to find something to fit taste and budget.

Perfect
What a wonderful place to go summer or winter with outstanding food and service. We enjoy the Black Sheep whenever we are traveling in Northern Vermont. Don't miss the little town (city) of Vergennes which offers several great choices for a quick meal or for the best in French cuisine. How can such a small town offer so much?    [22 Nov 2005 18:17:11]

Always On
Have been to the BSB about six times, once holding a Christmas Party for our small office. This place is always on. The food is beautiful bistro food, expertly done and presented. Staff is always well-trained, polite and helpful. For the price, this is the best restaurant in Vermont, easily. Looking forward to a Shelburne venue for Michel.    [13 Feb 2006 15:41:03]

Visited by Boat
We traveled by boat from Buffalo to Lake Champlain in August of 2005 and just happened upon this wonderful little restaurant. $15 entrees and $5 appetizers was a delightful surprise. Great wine list and the fries and mashed potatoes served with dinner were spectacular. I had a fish entree and my wife had chicken and both were perfect.

I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone in the area.    [15 Feb 2006 12:18:14]

Make a Reservation - and Keep It
In June we were staying at the Basin Harbor Club an made a reservation at the Black Sheep due to the terribly rainy weather. What a find and what a gem this place is. Great food and an ample wine list at great prices. Wonderful service with fine attention to detail.

My only complaint is not the fault of the management or the chef. The tables are very close so the night we went we had to listen to some obese blowhard at the next table. Gosh, he was quite full of hot air. My impression is he was just a blimp passing through and he does not regularly tie up at The Black Sheep.

Definitely worth a visit.    [22 Jun 2006 22:04:56]

Our Favorite
Definitely worth the drive from downtown Burlington, even though there are so many good choices here. Warm, cozy, and just the best price for the best food.    [21 Dec 2006 12:38:51]

Taste Around the Tapas
We went in July 07 and had a wonderful time sitting outside in perfect weather. The service was friendly and attentive. The appetizers sounded wonderful so we started with three plates of them and some wonderful aptly priced wine. And we simply kept ordering more of them. For those of you who love to taste many different things and not indulge in one large entree, this is the place!    [27 Jul 2007 11:49:19]
