Anything but Authentic We ordered two burritos with two sides each. It came with two bags of chips and "hot" sauce, including one marked with three skull/cross bones death hot sauce that I found a step up from mild. The beans were badly cooked, probably not soaked long enough as black beans need to be and had almost no flavor, severely lacking in salt. I could hardly taste the cheese at all. The rice was a very poor attempt at "Southwestern" rice. The onion in it was cut in huge chunks and the rice was a bit dry. I even doubt the owners of this restaurant have even been near the Mexico/California border.
The signs and ads for this restaurant boast the best Mexican in Vermont, and if it is, I'm going to starve for the next two years, or frequent the Taco Bell (which is more authentic than Mexicali). [16 Mar 2006 21:28:21]

Probably the Worst Mexican Food I Have Ever Had Just moving from Florida where there are a good amount of true Mexican-owned restaurants we have had a good sampling of Mexican food. We decided to try Mexicali for our first Mexican fix in Vermont.
Mexicali was by far the worst Mexican I have had at a sit down restaurant. The food was beyond bland. My wife's enchilada she couldn't even eat. The chicken was dry and the sauce had no flavor. Luckily, as we lived here longer we tried some other Mexican fare and found some other places for our Mexican fix.
To their credit (and not much is due) we did complain about the food on a comment card and were sent a free appetizer coupon. To say the least, it was thrown away. [23 Feb 2007 13:09:37]

Slightly Average and Then the Waiter Chased Us down for $0.28 My husband and I were on a rare Saturday evening out and spending a little time away from our 2 and 4 year old. We decided we wanted something somewhat simple, but decent for dinner before heading to a movie at the Majestic 10. First, my husband ordered the chicken tostada salad, but there were only two very miniscule pieces of chicken to be found in the entire salad. My husband made a quiet comment to me about it and I told him he should let the waiter know, but he said it was fine and just continued to eat like it was the best salad he ever had. We just decided to continue on and enjoy our "adult" night out.
When we were finished, my husband paid the bill and we walked across the busy courtyard to the theater to get tickets for our movie and then to do a little window shopping at the stores at Maple Tree Place to kill some time before the movie. It's summer, so there was lots of pedestrian traffic and people eating outside at this restaurant and another neighboring restaurant. As we came out of the theater after purchasing our tickets we heard someone yelling "sir, sir" and our maniac waiter running towards us. My husband and I stopped and the waiter proceeded to tell us in a very loud voice for everyone in the courtyard to hear that we only left $23 on a $23.28 bill. When my husband was counting out the money to pay the bill at the restaurant he mistakenly forget to include the bill he had in his hand that would more than cover the $0.28 and the tip and out it back in his wallet instead of the bill portfolio.
This crazy waiter was basically chasing us down for a tip and not the remaining $0.28 on the bill. My husband had every intentions of leaving a tip and not skimping out on $0.28 and we were completely amazed and in shock at the event and at being chased across a courtyard for essentially $0.28. My husband should've handed over the $0.28 to this waiter for totally making an unnecessary scene and left it at that! Instead my husband apologized and handed over enough to cover the $0.28 and a tip. Needless to say, we will never go back after that unnecessary charade! [22 Jul 2007 03:08:30]
