Real Men Eat Elsewhere Hard to find anything on the menu that looked good (other than dessert). Might have enjoyed dining there if I had been born an ungulate. Couldn't bring myself to eat the sandwich I ordered after giving it the once over - bread was stale and hard...deli meats and cheese looked suspiciously over-processed...piles of sprouts inflated the thing to almost surreal proportions...at a price that would make an oil sheik proud (thank goodness I only ordered the half). Had to settle for pilfering chips from a nearby plate with a "blah" (partner's words) veggie burger. Finished the dining experience listening to the wait person argue that the cheese was "real". Wish I had noticed that. At least my dogs didn't go to bed hungry. [09 Dec 2004 02:52:44]

TO DIE FOR! My daughter and I ate at the Colophon Sat. 5th 2005. We ordered a dessert as we were still kind of full from lunch. It was Choc. D. Cake with hot fudge, ice cream and whipped cream over it. OOOOHHH YUM! It was so huge we were grateful we ordered one to share as even then we had to leave some on the plate! We watched other orders as they were going by us to other people and were quite impressed with the sizes and looks of them. Because we were so impressed my husband and I are going to treat ourselves for lunch at your rest. on Valentines Day! Your desserts are to die for so we're looking forward to see how we can prove this "Real Men Eat Elsewhere" totally wrong! [08 Feb 2005 13:54:34]

People Love This Place The food is good, the service is great. Generally you could make the Colophon cuisine in your own kitchen, and the ingredients aren't of great quality.
Aside from the desserts, the food isn't worth the price. What's great about the Colophon Cafe is its location, its ambience, and especially the people who work there. Come to the Colophon to have a good time, and remember -- life is short, so order dessert first. [23 May 2006 23:15:45]

Vastly Over Rated Have eaten there twice, been there three times. Food is OK - it's hard to screw up soup, salad and sandwiches but we have eaten better and cheaper elsewhere in B'ham.
Each time I thought the service to be slow and indifferent. The third time they seated us at a table directly across from the bathroom next to the copy machine, behind a post. No other tables around. After waiting for service 10 minutes we got nothing but menus and we had to stop a waitress to ask for those. During those 10 minutes the wait staff used the copy machine about 5 times but never could even bring us water.
We left and will not be back. Very over rated. Better food can be had elsewhere. Try Dos Padres Mexican restaurant down the street. Better & cheaper food, much better service and ambiance and they actually want your business. [19 Jan 2007 14:14:45]

yummy soup in a rainy land try the soups all are original and not out of a bag. The split pea is on the menu everyday as well as the African Peanut. The owners are working really hard to use local dairies and farmers to promote a sustainable business. Unfortunately for the customer this can translate to slightly higher prices, but to me completely worth it. Also, their homemade hummus is amazing and they cater to gluten-free diets. The childrens menu is healthy and does not include one deep fried item. If you are health and environmentally conscious, you need to support this longstanding business. If not-go to McDonalds.
