mixed review I have dined here 3 times. The first 2 times, I loved the food. The last time however, I was disappointed. I had the lamb which was breaded and over cooked. The accompaniments were yam mixed with onions and cheese...(too many competing flavors) and apple fritters that looked as though they had sat under a heat lamp for a couple of hours. My husband's steak, however, was excellent and the side of potatoes was appropriate for the dish. Overall, I think I was overcharged for a meal of lamb that was overcooked. I mentioned it to the waiter and no attempt was made to discount any of the food. We decided that next time we could go elsewhere and get better food for half the price. [11 Dec 2001 18:46:42]

Outstanding Food Service & Atmosphere Our family has eaten at the Calcutta Grill often over the past three years. This is one of our favorite restaurants with a decidedly Northwest menu.
Our servers are always professionally friendly but unintrusive. Food is served much in the European style - not forced upon you before you have completed the first course. The only challenge we have had with servers is when we have taken small children, but that is a challenge anywhere!
The atmosphere in the restaurant is fantastic. A seat by the window offers a beautiful view of the Newcastle golf course, with Lake Washington and the Seattle skyline beyond. At sunset this is simply breathtaking (when there are no clouds to obstuct the view). In the spring and summer months a bagpiper standing on a knoll near the restaurant plays haunting music that draws people from their tables. When the weather is warm, the outdoor seating is filled almost every evening.
And of course, not to forget the food - the presentation is camera perfect and tastes every bit as good as it looks. We favor salmon and it is always fresh and delicious. They have an extensive wine list and the servers are well trained in their recommendations. The desserts are equally as delicious and beautiful, with the choices ranging from heavy to light (chocolate decadence to sorbet).
We seldom have "doggie bags" because we eat everything on our plates. This is a wonderful spot that I highly recommend! [17 Apr 2003 17:03:46]

During my trip to the Calcutta I was amazed by the amazing Northwest flavors that was provided by the gifted chiefs. However one concern really bothered my guest that I was entertaining from out of town. The house manager Derdra treated my co worker with a copious amount of disrespect. She stated that if we didn't like the service provided then we had better try another restaurant. She completely embarassed me in front of my associates. [06 May 2003 00:00:37]

We have eaten at the Calcutta grill many times, and in the past were very pleased with the food. But this time was very unhappy, I had the Mango Avocado salad, the Mango was not ripe the dressing was very bad. My husband and I both had the fish the fish was very good but the rice and vegetables were not, not worth the price at all. [13 Aug 2003 00:13:36]

incredible view, impressive place, nice food Been here several times, each time it is great. Okay, service could be ramped up a notch, but that's not the reason to come here. The view is. Fact that good food goes with it is a bonus. [19 Sep 2003 00:00:02]

Downhill I've been here before and the food and service were very good. However, on my most recent visit (2/04) a lot had changed. Service was slow and disorganized (forgotten items, wrong wine, etc) and the food was, well, just plain bad. Prime rib ordered medium rare arrived cold, as did the chicken breast, and lamb chops ordered medium were almost charred. The "molten" chocolate cake was cooked all the way through and when this was brought to the server's attention she seemed to disagree that a molten chocolate cake should be molten--she did, however, remove the cost of the item from our bill. However, the glass of the wrong wine that she brought she did forget to remove from the bill. All and all a very disappointing experience. [12 Feb 2004 13:51:28]

Would Not Recommend It I came to the Calcutta Grill excited for a top-notch dining experience. However, I left pretty disappointed. The view was nice and the food was decent (fairly overpriced, but decent). Unfortunately, the service was weak and upon appealing to a manager, she was outright rude. Apparently, they were doing US a favor by serving us. Will not return... ever. [11 May 2004 16:20:21]

DO NOT EXAGGERATE OK, the view is great, OK the prices are rather high, but the service is just above normal. The menu looks wonderful, but not of the highest quality. As it is convenient for us living in this area, we still go there, but the food is far from the high class the press let them pretend. Good, YES, excellent: probably not. At least avoid crowded days, or manage to eat as fast as they need to make sure the table will be ready for the next service. [07 Mar 2005 01:15:34]

No recommend The view is good, but that is all. The food used to be good, but now bad. I do not recommend steaks, it is too bitter to eat. My son could not eat single slice. They are taking advantage of only viewing. [29 Oct 2007 14:05:48]
