Authentic German Bakery Two generations of Wagner's still keep this authentic European bakery running. Wagner's provides the highest quality pastries and cakes. Delicious lunches priced right in a cheery lunch room in downtown Olympia round out the experience. Superb! [31 Oct 2003 14:30:40]

THIS PLACE IS GREAT! The New York Cafe, located in downtown Olympia, serves the best New York Style food you will find anywhere in the world, except good old New York itself of course. [27 Aug 2004 17:06:42]

Wedding Cake Appointment I had heard good things, very good things, about this bakery so my fiance and I setup an appointment to meet with someone regarding a wedding cake. (Since you had to make an appointment) I have to admit, I am VERY disappointed, so much in fact we decided to go elsewhere.
The first question of the guy that met with us was
"Did you make a deposit yet?" Now, I can UNDERSTAND that question, and needing to know so I didn't dwell on it, it was no big deal.
However!
After he let us look at the wedding cake catalog book for a few minutes his questions was. "Which cake do you want?"
If it was only that I wouldn't have gave it much thought, but he was extremely vague on the answers to questions we asked, very!, and was NOT helpful in the slightest.
We have never got a wedding cake before and we assumed an appointment would involve some help on what exactly they have. Fillings, frostings, etc.
The only thing we got asked, (About THREE times) was, "Well, which cake do you want?"
I personally find that rude, as if he is implying, 'We have a good reputation so we do not need to have service.' At least that is what my fiance and I got from how he was acting.
We will never advise anyone to go there regarding wedding cakes, but rather to Safeway of all places! That was more than helpful and willing to explain things to us. Even the first guy working in the bakery there who was not the 'wedding cake guy/gal' was more helpful in 20 seconds than the wagner's bakery guy. [23 Feb 2005 01:22:26]

Another Wedding Cake Appointment Our appointment at Wagner's could not have been more different. Four of us went in together (the bride and groom to be, as well as the bride's parents). We had an appointment at 8am on a Saturday and they were waiting for us. They provided us with more than ample samples of their cakes (each of us were given two large pieces of cake, and frankly, we could not eat all that they provided us). They brought out a huge book of cakes that they previously have made (they were gorgeous!), but assured us that if we had any other cake in mind, but bring in a picture, and they would replicate the cake. We were told that all the cakes were made by Mr. Wagner himself - no one else in the bakery does this. The artistry of the cakes was impressive - it was clear that not just anyone can craft these exquisite wedding cakes. While we were looking at the cake catalog, Mr. Wagner himself dropped by to see how we were doing. He was charming. Not sure who my daughter will ultimately pick to do her wedding cake, but can tell you, Wagner's is a class act. [05 Oct 2005 21:50:48]

Everything hydrogenated If you want to line your colon with fractionated, chemically engineered, plant-fat agro byproducts from ADM, this is your place. Everything they serve coats the roof of your mouth like an oil slick and is about as palatable.
I've ordered several things on several occasions and had the dubious pleasure of having them roll around in my stomach for weeks afterwards. Plus those awful industrial-food after-flavors.
As for the "New York style" food--maybe in the South Sound it qualifies. Anybody who's ever had real New York food won't be fooled by the hype.
Olympia is a lousy restaurant town, hands down, and that's unlikely to change as long as eaters have such low standards and won't pay for delicious food with excellent, high-quality ingredients. I.e., ingredients that come from nature, not agrobusiness factories. [16 Dec 2005 23:11:19]

Truly awkward~ You just cannot get any of the employees to be nice. It is not possible. This has been true for years. It is apparently not of great importance. No one ever seems happy and if I do not lose my appetite I try a sandwich, which is okay at first until it is, as stated above, left rolling around in my stomach for weeks. There is only one reason for Wagners in my opinion. The cinnamon bread. It is heavy and hydrogenated and I love it. I cannot help it. This is maybe the only exception to a organic diet I consume. It just tastes darn tasty. Warm, real butter. Mmmmmmmm. You do not have to go to Wagners for a flogging though-it is available at other groceries in town. [08 Dec 2006 20:33:39]

...but even Europe has bad food Whoever thinks this is a European bakery obviously hasn't been to Europe in the last 2 decades, but then I've been to some autobahn cafeterias where there was some pretty sketchy products. If shortening based frosting, glazy cherries, icing and glaze on EVERYTHING, and whip cream, chocolate frosting out of a box (yeah the boxes are on display and everything). Then this is your bakery. If fresh artisan pastries and skillfully made food is your thing keep walking about 5 blocks down the road. [28 Mar 2007 16:55:36]

Love this place My sister has lived in Olympia for almost 10 years. I visit her often and a trip to Wagner's is going to happen at least once. I've never had bad service and found the employees to be very accomodating. The food is fantastic and the fact that they add a little something on the side with every dish (including toast!) really makes me feel that they go the extra mile and care about their customers. This is one of my all time favorite places. [25 Jun 2007 10:29:07]

Go for the pastries Despite what others have said, I genuinely like Wagner's. I've been going there since I was a small girl, and have been to Germany and eaten at real bakeries. It isnt the same, but the pastries here are alot closer to the real deal than people seem to give them credit for. The cakes and pastries are very tasty. [25 Jun 2007 12:04:49]
