Sunday Brunch
I went here with my family for a nice Sunday brunch after church. The food was great and the service was excellent.    [12 Apr 2004 14:15:38]

Local Best Mexican
Always courteous and professional staff, with menu choices that distinguish it from its local chain competitors. Great salsa and chips to start. Coupon perks are a nice plus.    [18 Jun 2004 09:56:35]

We enjoy going here every time we are in the mood for Mexican food. The food is great and ample, and the service is friendly.    [30 Jun 2004 21:18:29]

Best Mexican in Miles
The specials are always worth a try, especially when they have seafood. Much better than the chains, plus the owners and staff are 100% local. Keep the pesos in Kitsap!    [06 Jan 2006 03:04:45]

Almost Authentic!
This is probably the closest thing to actual Mexican cooking that is available in a sit down restaurant in the area.

The service is top notch and the decorations are kind of "Economy TJ". The booths are home made so can be a little uncomfortable if you get one with a broken down pad, but overall the furniture is in good shape.

The food is the star. While you get the traditional chips and salsa, make sure to order the bean dip while you are perusing the menu. This is one of the few restaurants that has traditional food such as Menudo (available in either red or white ... I like the red), machaca and carnitas.    [27 Mar 2006 20:39:03]

Sliding down a slippery slope
The food has really slipped in quality from what it once was. It USED TO BE good. It has gone downhill and the service has too. I used to be a huge fan of El Sombrero and eat there exclusively for my Mexican needs. No longer! The last several times we have been there we have watched them starting to take more and more shortcuts on the food to where it just tastes bland and pretty tasteless. The rice is flavorless, the beans were greasy and the rest of the food had no seasoning the last time we went. The portions have gotten smaller and we were very disappointed. We will not be going back.    [14 Apr 2007 17:54:10]

Disgusting
I have eaten at El Sombrero for many years without complaint. Today, however, I killed 8 fruit flies while eating my meal. I saw countless others flying around near our table. The large tub of salsa was left uncovered on the counter. It was disgusting. When I brought the issue to the attention of the server, she said, "Oh, I know. We always have problems with fruit flies during the summer months." SUMMER MONTHS! It's May 5th and the temperature last night was 39 degrees. I ate nothing. Avoid this place at all costs!    [04 May 2007 23:04:48]

Definitely not as good as it was
I have gone to this restaurant for well over 10 years, and I used to think it was fantastic. The review above is right, though. The food is now bland and uninspired. The portions are half what they once were. The service is horrible. I was hoping it was just a fluke, but everything was disappointing three times in a row. I do not plan to go back.    [27 Oct 2007 19:19:39]

Unfortunate split
Well, while I raved about this place last year, it has become an embarrassment for Mexican food lovers. The food is bland and tasteless. The salsa is overloaded with cilantro and only mildly spicy at best. This has become more of a drinking establishment for the young than a real Mexican restaurant since the partnership split. We got the partner that knows how to run a bar and Belfair got the cooking partner ... DANG!!

The place is still clean and the service is still top notch so it is still a good place to go for drinks and chips.    [28 Oct 2007 09:43:35]

Good food at a good price
We eat at El Sombrero about once a month. I have never had a bad experience there. The waitstaff is always courteous and prompt. Food arrives quickly and hot. Portions are large. Prices are cheaper than comparable Mexican restaurants in Gig Harbor and Bremerton. Service in the lounge not as great but is probably to be expected. Food still the same. They serve ice cold draft beer which goes great with Mexican food.    [09 Jul 2008 18:52:10]
