Cafe Besalu, Best of Seattle This small European-style cafe stands out because of the extraordinary craftsmanship of James Miller, owner and pastry chef. Miller works in plain view of the customers, turning out some of the best croissants, danishes, galettes, tarts, quiches and other pastries in Seattle. In fact if a better pain au chocolat exists anywhere I haven't found it yet. The seasonal fruit danishes, buttery ginger biscuit, pear gallette, lemon tart and quiche lorraine are all favorites.
The cafe has a tile floor, cadmium orange walls and metal topped tables. World music is typically played and the cafe showcases local photography. Outside there are tables and benches, which provide a pleasant alternative to sitting inside. [22 May 2003 15:49:48]

and what about that coffee!? I'm a regular. Crying on Mondays and Tuesdays when they're closed. Rejoicing on other days when I settle in with the best Cafe au Lait (for real, not some crappy American imitation) and my two croissants with homemade jam. Yes, my butt expands as the week goes on! YUMMERS!! [08 Mar 2004 00:13:42]

NOT KID FRIENDLY!!! Wow - don't go here if you have a baby!!! My seven month old and I were there to enjoy a cup of coffee with friends and after a while, she became fussy. I was on my way out of the door - just putting on her poncho and gathering up our bag when one of the employees came over and asked us to leave. I have never been asked to leave an establishment prior to this experience. When I told him I was leaving already he kept going on about it. I was humiliated and hurt by their treatment. I refuse to apologize for my daughter - she is a baby and she cries. The incredible insensitivity of this place is beyond appalling. I will never return and if you have a baby, I'd recommend trying someplace else. Cafe Besalu is most definitely NOT kid friendly. [09 Sep 2005 15:15:32]
